If you enjoy the Stephanie Plum books or even if you didn’t, give this one a try.
Entertaining, interesting plot, mystery, fun characters. I initially picked it because it looked like a fun, silly read and while it was fun and entertaining, it hit on some heavier subject matter. Bonus was the narrator, Lorelei King, love her voice. She also narrates the Stephanie plum books so this book felt familiar but definitely fresh.

Ganska snart efter att jag påbörjat en ny bok börjar rader till recensioner utkristallisera sig i huvudet; något om språket, någon referens jag kan göra, hur jag uppfattar karaktärerna. Ibland ändras det helt under läsningens gång, ibland är det första intrycket som blir slutrecensionen.
När jag läser den här boken är det ursäkter som börjar radas upp.
Att jag är lite deppig över både världsläge och livssituation. Att jag räknar trist matte och svarar på arga mail på dagarna. Att jag tränar för lite och därmed missar många endorfiner. Att jag aldrig tittar på tv men kanske trots allt har samma behov av sit-och romcom som en medelmänniska. Att jag tycker det är svårt att vara tonårsmamma och därmed regrederar till min egen inre tonåring.
Ja, ni fattar. Poängen: jag rycks med och tycker den här boken är supertrevlig att läsa, TROTS: 1) Det är alldeles för många snabba, cheeky repliker för att karaktärerna/berättaren ska vara mänskliga (jag kan nästan höra de pålagda skratten i bakgrunden) 2) Utseendefokuseringen och det förälskade flummet känns romantik a la ytligt 90-tal (och därmed) långt under min värdighet. 3) Den genomgående cliffhangern kring huvudkaraktärens bakgrund är superlätt att räkna ut, ändå låter författaren den hänga kvar till (och bortom) bokens sista sida (a la "låt oss gissa kring Rachels bebis i minst en säsong för mycket).
Det är trost:en (förmodligen mest 2:an) som tar bort en stjärna. För jag ler åt de snabba replikerna, älskar hur både mamman (i min ålder) och dottern (i min dotters ålder) får vara coola, men också tjejiga och löjligt förälskade, och är lika såld på cliffhanger-poängen som alla andra som växt upp som såpoperafantaster. Dessutom - och det här går lite stick i stäv med resten av det lättsamma upplägget: Jones ger väldigt lite gratis. Det här är den första delen i en serie, men hon kör på utan introduktioner eller förklaringar. Saker får bli tydliga(re) med tiden, och du måste själv läsa för att få veta. Egentligen inte kärnfysik, men jag inser hur ovanlig den ingången är i mycket litteratur, särskilt i deckargenren.
Men det är en sidotanke, nästan som ännu en ursäkt ("Det är faktiskt lite smart också!"). Litteratur får faktiskt vara kul och underhållande och Netflix-chillig. Fin/fulkultur-debatten är lika 90-tal som att det är de tysta männen med breda axlar som får tjejerna att gå igång. Och jag är inte fulare för att jag köper att de tysta männen med breda axlar får tjejerna att gå igång. Typ (som vi sa på 90-talet).
P.s. Jag var trött på Lisbet Salander-typerna innan den andra Lisbet Salander-boken ens var utläst. Men Lisbet Salander-referensen i den här boken känns bara kul. Så det så. D.s.

Finally gave up after the sheriff of the town had a wet dream at work and orgasmed in front of a US Marshall and a state cop. And no one questioned it. Also, the extreme overuse of the word “gape,” as well as there are so many’s plots intertwining that every character magically knows about because “honey I found out years ago” with no actual explanation to any of it.

Alright, so let’s cut right to the chase. The truth is, this is not a perfect book. A Bad Day for Sunshine borrowed a lot of ideas from First Grave on the Right. Sunshine is as witty and fiery as Charley, and Levi is as dark, brooding, and dangerous as Reyes. It went deeper than that though, Levi and Reyes had different issues, but still there was a similar character profile.
In addition, I find it hard to believe that every man Sunshine comes across is sexy, and of course wants to sleep with her. I’m definitely over it. Been there, read that…
Basically the similarities were there…
and they were obvious.
In any good suspenseful series there are generally two plots. There’s the main plot, which will spread out over multiple books (or the entire series), but there is also a minor plot that’s solved in each individual installment. We all know how this works, right?
So, the small subplot in A Bad Day for Sunshine was decent. I wasn’t blown away by the cleverness of it, but I felt interest. So, decent. The series plot, however, I saw that coming from a mile away. This is only the first book, so nothing was truly revealed but it still felt too obvious. If I could see it, why couldn’t Sunshine? I would have preferred she be in the know, and to shake up the plot a bit.
There is always a chance I’m wrong.
I just don’t think so.
In spite of my little voice telling me reasons why I shouldn’t like this book, in the end it didn’t matter. I was addicted.
I guess there’s just something about Darynda Jones’s writing style, her go to playbook, that seems to really sink its hooks into me. I’ve always loved a series I could lose myself in. For me, in this period of my life, Darynda Jones does it for me. Not only was this story similar to Charley Davidson, but A Bad Day for Sunshine also kept me reading with that same vigor.
Charley Davidson was the first series I binge read since I was a teenager. If Sunshine Vicram were 10 books in, I’m positive I’d be reading them back to back like the addict I am.
Clearly I like the Damaged Dark Soul anti-hero hero.
Clearly I love the smart mouthed heroine.
Whatever it was, I really did love Sunshine Vicram & Co. Frankly, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about them. My brain is still yelling at Sun, because how can she not see what’s right in front of her eyes! Also, because damn if I didn’t feel the chemistry between Sunny and Levi. They’re going to be explosive!
Plus, as much as I liked Sun and Levi, I almost enjoyed reading about Sun’s daughter Auri more. I’d say through most of the book I was eager to be back in the perspective of Sunshine’s daughter. I’m thinking maybe Ms Darynda should try her hand at a YA book. I think she’d blow me away. She’s guaranteed at least one sale, that’s for sure.
So yeah, I liked it.
I’m a sucker sucker for Darynda Jones.
