I didn't expect to like this one as much as I did - it stars a couple of minor characters and an area of the Psy-Changeling universe I didn't find particularly interesting - but the strength of the romance and the detail of the plot carried it through. This is something I really admire about the series; I think Singh has a definite vision in mind for where she's going with this particular universe, and she's writing that story - she's creating something rather than going for the easy-out version so many romance writers embrace, where they settle on a section of their story that their readers enjoy which is easy to crank out on a regular basis. (No shade here, it's a valid career decision. But these books are just a step beyond.)

No love for the cover, though, which features some dude who looks like an eighties cop show extra and bears no resemblance to any character in the story.

I love this series and I love the story that spans across all of the books. Each book (mostly) focuses on a different couple. Even if I don't especially love the couple, I still like a lot of the book.

The main characters of this book, Katya and Dev, are perfectly fine and interesting. There were some strong heartfelt moments in the book, but they never really grabbed me as a couple.

Katya was held captive, tortured, and her mind was altered against her will. She was dumped unconscious in front of Dev's building. Dev is the leader of Shine, an organization created by the Forgotten, people who are descended from the Psy who broke off from the others several generations ago.

Katya and Dev are both sure that her mind was implanted with directives to hurt Shine, but they are still drawn to each other.

I think this is my least favourite on this series. I hate Dev and his manipulative, bully tactics, and I don't feel this was the best plot wise. But I do love Katya and there were some exciting developments I did enjoy!

I think I'm burning out on this series finally. 30% and I don't like the hero and how fast the romance is moving for the trauma the heroine suffered. Not vibing with it and there are other characters I would rather read about.

Not as good as some of the others but it does fill in a few gaps that I had in the plot due to skipping past it.

I have been thinking about how this book ended as I continued the series and its been nagging at me so much that I had to put my thoughts out there...I think that this book (and series) would be more compelling if Katya had actually died. The facts are that you can't save everyone. While I understand that some series (and it appears this one as well) stick to the moral guidelines that only bad people die - I personally think that the series is slowly escalating towards a breaking point and Katya's death would not only continue that escalation but also provide a compelling reason towards working against the Silence protocol, the Council, and Ming especially.

Devraj Santos. That's all I have to say. Also Angela Dawe does an amazing job narrating this book. I think the only way I'm going to make a dent in any Singh's series is by audio and thank you hoopla for having so many of them.
Trigger Warnings: ableism, memory loss, physical injuries, grief & loss depiction, murder, death of mother, murder & attempted murder, and torture, including sensory deprivation, food depravity & mind invasion
