Wasn’t as great as I expected it to be but still a very good read. Quite a long read but that might just be me.

When I began reading this book I enjoyed it immensely, particularly the portrayal of the characters and the general mystery surrounding them, particularly Jace and yet, as I became more and more immersed in the book, I found my jaw dropping further and further at what was enclosed in the pages. I found myself quickly attached to the protagonist in particular, Clarissa Fray, and various other characters in the book which is perhaps why I found myself so helpless as I read the last sentence and the realisation struck me as regards what I had just read. I sense that this series, if I muster the strength to continue it, will ruin my life.

Wow, this was way worse than I remembered it being.

This series and this book hold a special place in my heart. It was the thing that got me back into reading, after essentially only reading assigned books during high school. It was fun and intense and I really liked it.

That was 2 years ago and oh boy have things changed.

Maybe I'm a new person. Maybe my 2 years of vigorous reading have altered my literary priorities. Whatever the reason, I found this to be very poorly written, with awkward pacing and inconsistent characterization. Clary's convictions and opinions fluctuate scene by scene; the only consistent idea she has is that Jace is hot. And speaking of Jace, his behavior makes absolutely no sense!! Their "love story" is built on him quoting Wikipedia and standing next to her. That's not romantic in the slightest.

Isabelle's character felt contrived and like Clare was trying too hard to make a hardcore femme fatale, which made the fact that she's Clary age (15/16) stand out even more. Alec was alright, but his change of heart comes out of nowhere. Simon was the only character I still liked by the end of things.

The whole storyline with the vampires makes no sense in the long run, or even within the story itself. It's only set up for what happens to Simon later on. It goes against a lot of the themes this is trying to say. Why would Clary suddenly decide that Downworlders aren't horrible when 1) her first instinct is that they are freaky and 2) the only interactions she has had with them have proven either uncomfortable, unhelpful, or potentially fatal?? The only thing I can think of is that she likes Luke, so they're all okay?

Also, Valentine being simultaneously slim and thicc is incongruous and only puts this image in my mind:

Después de la mala experiencia que tuve con la adaptación cinematográfica, el libro superó todas mis expectativas. Es un buen inicio para una saga, me dejo con ganas de más y eso es bueno, estoy a la espera de leer los siguientes libros, esperando sean tan buenos, o mejores, que el primero.

I was intrigued by this failed first attempt at a comic adaptation of Cassandra Clare's City of Bones, but it wasn't available anywhere online, seemingly having been purged from the internet. But I managed to find a copy of all the released issues. I didn't except it to be good, but I was surprised at how bad it was.

The formatting was occasionally horrible, to the point that it attributed dialogue to the wrong character, one time having a character reply to themself. This incorrect attribution ended up dissolving a lot of the establishing character details from the original book, which was disappointing to say the least.

The art felt mediocre but not expressly awful, so I didn't mind it on the whole. I appreciated that Clary was actually short and not weirdly long but scaled down like the current comics seem to have her (I haven't read it yet, but the images I have seen seem to have her be that way; suffice it to say, she does not look a little over 5 feet in the new ones, she looks average height at least). Besides that, everyone has a strangely old-looking face. Idk but they're supposed to look 15-16 and they look 30.

Plotwise, not much to say: it's an abridged version of the original with poorly executed transitions and exposition.

My favorite part was definitely when it ended halfway through and the rest of the book was just an extended preview for an entirely different graphic novel. It was actually intriguing with a compelling art style and I'm definitely going to look into it.

A star for me being able to finish it, and a .5 star for actually getting a fan base and one star for trying.

The first half was so busy I had trouble keeping up but the 2nd half was much better but not enough for me to read the next book.
