I really liked the premise of this book, specially because I love AI stories, and I love stories with child protagonists in a wide, dangerous world. However, I was mostly bored with this. Much of the focus is on the futuristic, interplanetary politics, with the characters, their feelings and relationships left in the dust.
While I do think politics can be interesting, it’s only insofar as it helps develops the characters and their story, which was not the case here, or at least not in a very satisfactory manner for me. And so, the characters felt more like tools to keep the plot going, rather than the beating hearts of it. Most of science and tech stuff was throwing incomprehensible jargon in my face, too, and I quickly lost interest in it.
One positive point is the art: it’s all done in watercolors, and the juxtaposition of the traditional art style and futuristic, sci fi scenarios was interesting, not to talk of how gorgeous the paintings were. But that’s about the only good thing I can think about, that and Driller. I will definitely not be continuing with this series.

This is a supremely solid start to a series!! So glad I picked it up after hearing about it from various places online.
“LITTLE BOT’S GONNA SPARK OFF AND STUPID DRILLER TOO STUPID TO FIX HIM!”
I’ve been reading a lot of mainstream comics and felt the desire to pick up something more original lately. I realized Jeff Lemire wrote a handful of the other trades I read in 2020, so here I am!
Descender has a lot of qualities that may make it so it becomes a new favorite. A space opera, featuring artificial intelligence and an interesting political system, with absolutely gorgeous artwork. The watercolor style is so pleasing to look at and can create tension or effect just with the light and dark range it has!!
I already love Tim-21 and I’m excited to see where this story takes him! Robots always are something I adore in fictional settings and I’m looking forward to the new ways this series uses them. We already have so many angles with the UGC, the Harvesters, the Scrappers, and then the Rebels on top of it all. I sense chaos and I’m eagerly waiting for it!

The art is pretty, which is the only reason this steaming pile of crap gets more than 1 star. I've really enjoyed plenty of Jeff Lemire's comics, but Descender is just horrible writing. I forced myself through this opening volume, and by the end just regretted all the time wasted. Not only is the story and dialogue atrociously told, but whomever did the lettering consistently botches punctuation, spelling, and grammar in glaring ways.
Avoid this rubbish.

This is the best sci-fi I've read in quite awhile. Jeff Lemire is awesome!
