Cute! I’d recommend if you need to get out of a reading slump. It’s an easy read with a quick payoff and all the right clichés.
What a cute book! It just gives you lots of happy feels, drops some hard truths and gives great character growth.
I couldn't stop thinking of ROMAN HOLIDAY when I was reading this book. I love that movie and the sort of magic that happens to Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn over the course of that day. It's an once-in-a-lifetime adventure that happens to both of them and that is perfectly replicated in this book. There is this effect that happens to both characters that forever changes them. It also has a bit of THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR feel to it as well but lighter. The subjects aren't as heavy but it feels like the stakes are just as high.
I learned so much about Hong Kong and Korean culture. It was informative and entertaining and fascinating. The food! Oh my gosh, you need snackage while reading this book because there is so much food, you are going to get hungry I promise.
I thought the characters complimented each other well and did their own growing which was definitely needed. The biggest problem I had with this book was the beginning when Lucky was "high". I don't really know what to call it because she was coherent (ish) but she mixed her sleeping pills and her anxiety meds. I spent the whole first third of the book just worried about her. I knew that Jack was going take of her (because that's how romance novels work) but honestly, I just kept thinking about how much danger she was in and that feeling, my own anxiety toward it, made it impossible for me to enjoy the first part of the book. I almost DNFed it. I didn't and I'm glad I didn't but it was rough going there.
Overall, this is another great addition to Maurene Goo's collection. I am happy these books exist and I think a lot of people will enjoy them.
Conclusion: Have her sign my arc

This was the first of the many May 7th releases that I picked up in a row. This sounded like a cute diverse romance book which is one of my favourite things to read. Sadly, this book fell flat for me. I just feel like the romance wasn't developed enough and it didn't feel like a fully developed story. It wasn't bad, I just needed a lot more from it.
I was so pleasantly surprised by Somewhere Only We Know! It was exactly what I needed when I first picked it up, something fun and lighthearted. I loved both of our main characters, Jack & Lucky. I thought they were so sweet and fun to read about. While Jack does not start out with the best motives I feel like that was not something that negatively affected my experience reading, it seemed more like it needed to be included to add your stereotypical relationship conflict. I would absolutely ADORE having an adaptation of this. It would make the perfect romcom.
Oh Goo! You’re the cutest writer I ever did read. Maureen Goo’s books are so lighthearted and happy and just make me warm inside. They also make me chuckle and giggle!
When I need a book to make me feel the feels and transport you to a happy gooey land you really need to pick up a book by Goo. Specifically Somewhere Only We Know because it’s my favourite so far!
The characters were funny and quirky and so dang cute. There is an insta-love trope going on which usually isn’t my jam but the quick chapters and the humour won me over along with the sweetness that is Goo’s characters. Tough topics like anxiety and self medication was handled well and I liked how the author tackled such a topic.
Oh and have I mentioned how much I love all the titles for her books? SO CUTE.
**Thank you Raincoast Books for sending an ARC to me in exchange for an honest review.**

I was really excited to read this because I’ve loved every Maurene Goo book that I’ve read, and I was so happy to receive an ARC from Raincoast!
In the last year or so, I’ve gotten into K-pop (mostly BTS but there are a couple other bands I’ve been listening to as well). So my K-pop love made me even more excited to read Somewhere Only We Know!
I totally got a “Roman Holiday” vibe from this book, and I loved it! I thought the alternating POV worked really well, and I was interested in reading about Lucky’s career: how she worked hard for her dream, and how she was struggling to find the joy in performing like she used to. I also liked reading Jack’s story. He had his own career struggles, and I knew over the course of the book that he would fall for Lucky and as he did, he would have to own up to his true intentions after realizing who she was.
Somewhere Only We Know was sweet, funny, and the descriptions of the food made me so hungry! This might be my favourite of Maurene Goo’s books, and I highly recommend it, especially if you’re in the mood for a sweet contemporary YA romance.

It's either 3 or 3.5 stars, haven't decided. This book was cute, and I am always in the mood Goo's books. It's certainly my favorite one yet.
I'm not really sold on the insta-love thing, and while it had some cute romcom moments, it never had the "awwww" get me in the feels that I was hoping for. The chemistry between Lucky and Jack was so-so for me, again, the fall in love in one day thing...just, ehh. If you like that schtick then you'll probably really enjoy this.
Side note but uggghhh, I hate it when characters go snooping through the boyfriend's phone (because it's ALWAYS the girl/friend who does it, usually in a fit of jealousy).

Honestly, anything I read of Goo's I would love. She has such a way with writing that you get immersed into the story! I am not a K-pop fan at all, and you don't have to be to even enjoy this book.
Love this book so much!
Love this book so much!
Thank you, Maurene Goo, for putting this HUGE smile on my face! Somewhere Only We Know was an absolute delight. I had previously read articles calling this "a modern-day Roman Holiday", and I must admit, Goo did a fantastic job capturing the essence of the original story, while making it modern and meaningful for the YA audience.
Lucky was a K-pop princess, and her days were filled with work, work, and more work. At the end of her tour, she escaped her security detail, and ventured out to enjoy Hong Kong on her own. Certain events bring her into the path of Jack, who happened to be moonlighting as a tabloid photographer. In an effort to get a big Lucky scoop, he offered to show her around Hong Kong, but the more time they spent together, the more their feelings became intertwined. This question if Lucky and Jack could make this feeling last for more than a night.
I instantly fell in love with Lucky, and became fiercely protective of her. She was so sweet and genuine, and I empathized with the battle she was fighting within herself. She loved having the opportunity to be a singing sensation, but she longed for more normalcy and autonomy. It was easy to see how much this one day of freedom meant, and I wanted more of that work-life balance for her.
Though I liked Jack, in general, it took me a looooong time to trust him. His motives were not pure, and his deception was something that could have ruined Lucky. It was good to see he had a conscience, and was able to see beyond the famous veneer and recognize Lucky as an actual person.
The two of them together made my heart soar. I adored their interactions, and as they grew closer and closer to one another, my heart beat faster and faster. Some may condemn this as instalove, but I DON'T CARE! It was fun. It was sweet. It was adorable and charming. It made me happy. I loved the way each of them could really "see" one another, and they were supportive and encouraging. They were a perfect coupling, and I wanted their adventure to last forever.
I had the best time frolicking in Hong Kong with these two. First of all, we ate A LOT. Goo incorporated so much food into their 24-hour adventure, and I was totally jealous...and hungry. I also loved that she brought us to so many different points of interest. I love when an author utilizes the setting of their book, and Goo practically made Hong Kong another character in this story. It was a wonderful backdrop for this whirlwind romance, and it just ratcheted up my desire to visit there someday.
But, a BIG reason for this grin on my face was that ending! My smile grew wider and wider with each sentence, and it was perfection for me. It also had me yearning for a sequel, but you know, that's me reacting to how much I loved both Lucky and Jack, and I just want more of their story.
Somewhere Only We Know was so many things. It was a love story, but it was also a story of finding oneself and their purpose, and taking the action necessary to make their wants come to fruition. This book surpassed my expectations, and obviously left me drying my happy tears.
