I was intrigued by this book, but it fell short for me. The story takes place in a small town where a mysterious creature, the October Boy, rises every Halloween night, and teenage boys compete to take him down for a chance to escape town. The atmosphere was definitely eerie, capturing that classic small-town horror vibe, but I just didn’t feel invested in the characters.
While I appreciate a good horror story, I found the plot too predictable, and the writing style didn’t pull me in as much as I’d hoped. The pacing was off; it felt rushed in parts where I wanted more detail and then dragged in scenes that could’ve been shorter. (I thought this was 100+ pages? Why did it feel longer??) I also had trouble connecting with the protagonist—his motivations felt underdeveloped, which made it hard to root for him.
Overall, Dark Harvest has some chilling moments, but it didn’t quite deliver the tension or character depth I look for in horror. If you’re a fan of straightforward, atmospheric horror with a retro feel, this might be worth checking out, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression on me.

I'm sorry but i cannot stand this narrator and therefore could barely comprehend the story
3.5 stars!
I imagined Jack Burton, from Big Trouble in Little China narrating this book for me! 🤣
Once that clicked in place, I really enjoyed it.
I could handle the choppy writing more then normal.
I also wish that the back story of why this happens in the community was brought up. It definitely would have added to the plot in a positive way.
This was a fun and an entertaining book to read around Halloween! I really enjoyed it in all its pumpkin ridiculousness and candy flavored goodness!
Beware the October Boy!! 🎃👻☠️

This story is so original that the beginning had me really confused, thinking "did I just read that correctly?". What a gem this book is! So fun and unique. It is an excellent October read to get you in the Halloween spirit. While I wish the very end had a bit more meat to it, this book is thoroughly enjoyable and I enjoyed every second of it.

Dark Harvest was ok. I guessed the plot twist at the very beginning so I was listening to the rest just to confirm that. I really liked the idea of this book, but felt that no explanation was really given as to why whatever was occurring was occurring, and maybe that is just because it had been happening so long that no one knew.
Jerry Ricks is a disgusting human, and I despised everything about his character. I also found that the book wasn’t necessarily scary, but more of a body horror lots of gore sort of situation.
Be aware someone who doesn’t do well with explicit descriptions of bodily mutilation should probably not pick this book up.
