The book was somewhat confussing due to the repetitive use of extended metaphors. I found this to be quite distracting because the book is littered with them and the author uses the same ones over and over.
For example, the October Boy's hands are described as vines in almost every scene he appears in. Given how interesting this detail is, it's unlikely the reader would forget this after the second or third mention- so I'm not sure why the author belabors this point. It is done with every feature of the October boy, to the point that I think the book could be significantly shorter if these was removed. It doesn't really add to the story after the second or third time.
There are a few areas I would have wanted explored more- such as why the town has this ritual anyway, it seems to be glossed over. Also, if this happens every year, how is it kept a secret from everyone there? Wouldn't everyone in town have found out at this point if it's been happening for decades? And why did Kelly Haines get brought back to town, other than to be available as Peter McCormick's love interest? I didn't understand why the Harvester's Guild went through the trouble of bringing her back instead of just getting rid of her.

This one was hard to rate. Overall, it was enjoyable, intense, and really dark. It was a great concept, both with story and how the narrator speaks to you as if you grew up here and know everything about the night of the Run already. Similar to Frankenstein, some times the monster and the creature are not the same thing, and I love stories like that. I listened to it as a audio book, and really enjoyed how the narrator got into the story.  Also, I love the cover art on this, not that that's really a factor in reviewing.

The downside of being talked to like you already know about this night, is it leaves lots of questions. There's also SO MANY similies. And the story was a fast read, because it was more high action than story line. While the main characters do figure out the secrets of town, there isn't much actual character development.
