I found the start of the book was good, but as it continued it felt like most things were being a bit unnecessarily dragged on and I wasn’t enjoying it as much anymore

This was… not good. I should’ve expected it, considering I rated “Red Queen” only 3 stars. I don’t know why I decided to go further on with the series, but for some reason I did. And it wasn’t that enjoyable! In all honesty, I’m in desperate need of reading books to complete my reading goal and if I wasn’t, I would’ve DNFed this. I never DNF books. For the latter half of the book, I listened to an audiobook version although I own a physical copy.

I don’t feel like writing a full-on review, so here are some of my thoughts from my notes app that I had whilst reading one time!!!

  • i love cal but he’s kinda boring
  • maven is the only character that’s carrying the series and that’s only because he actually has a personality
  • OH AND KILORN AND SHADE, i like them, especially their bantering
(edit- SHADE DIED. HE WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO I LOVED)
  • mare = lightning girl NOT mareena
  • WE GET IT. ANYONE CAN BETRAY ANYONE. OOOOKAY.
  • cameron is girlboss

I’m done.

This book was both exactly what I wanted and completely unexpected at the same time. It both holds up the tropes of the genre while subverting them in the best ways.

I honestly can't believe all that happened in this book; the writing is so immersive, but also very tight -- so much is conveyed in concise and simple lines. Every page packed a punch; every new chapter came with new conflict, new missions, new obstacles, but it never felt overdone or like too much was happening. The tension and pacing kept me obsessed and invested.

I was expecting someone to die, but my guess was wrong.
I also expected Mare to end up in Maven's grasp again, but I was not prepared for how that happened.
I thought there would be a bit more romance between Mare and Cal, but their relationship would have felt unnatural if it had been pushed anymore in the narrative; they are still both processing and dealing with a lot in a short amount of time.

I am so excited for the rest of this series; I am completely hooked!

This sequel is not bad, but it’s not particularly great. Compared to the first book, this book is much darker and more serious. This is hardly any romance. It mostly deals with the inner and moral conflicts/dilemmas, while exploring dark themes. You can see the main character slowly spiral down a morally grey/dark path until she can hardly recognize herself. Although this book is relatively fast paced, I had a hard time becoming invested in the storyline. I did not really care much for the characters or the love interests, and did not gravitate towards the story as a whole. I don’t think I will be finishing this series, as there are many other books that I am more interested in.  The book is not bad at all, I’m sure many people who love the YA dystopian society  genre would really enjoy it. However, it is not for me, at least right now. In my opinion, for this type of genre, “The selection” series is better. There is a great balance of romance, drama, and action while being dystopian with a type of revolution/civil war, without being as dark/bleak.

I absolutely love this world and many of the characters within it.
I greatly enjoyed reading the first book, but the sequel was slightly harder to get through. The pace felt a lot slower and repetitive throughout the middle but later redeemed itself with a good finale - partially predictable yet still a good read.
Although I fell in love with Mare and her bravery and strength in the first book, she comes across as a bit of a martyr in this one, choosing to feel either sorry for herself or excessive rage when she once would have been smarter and braver, but I suppose character downfalls are just as realistic as character developments. I loved the introduction of both Jon and Cameron, probably the best parts of this book altogether
