I absolutely loved finally diving back into this world and seeing how Mare’s journey progresses. I’m always a sucker for YA fantasy and dystopians, so I probably will always rate them highly, but I didn’t want to stop reading this. Lately, though I’ve always loved a redemption arc, I’ve been loving the exploration of when it’s okay to do some morally gray things and when do we turn into monsters if that’s who we’re trying to defeat? Mare’s grip on her own morality and her learning to love and trust again are the biggest themes of this book. I loved meeting new characters and getting more depth in the old ones. I didn’t like Cal in the first book, but now I’m in love! And I don’t hate Kilorn anymore. And I have a deeper understanding of Farley. Though there may be animosity between characters, I’m sensing some found family vibes coming and I am so here for it. Though the ending was such a disheartening cliffhanger, that I’m almost scared to start the next book! (Good thing I don’t have it yet I guess eh?)

Antisemitic - had a part v reminiscent of the tattoos that Jews were forced to have and that character had just escaped from a prison where the “reds” and “silvers” are segregated.

Also used an ableist slur.  I will not expand further.

Disgusting to see and a shame as I enjoyed the general story just for it to be ruined by such acts by the author

I'm not enjoying what Mare Barrows, as protagonist, mood and purpose in this book does.

The narrations is jumbled and jumps around to at random points that make no sense. Plus, things happen that came from no where and  have no explanation.  All of it happens through  telling not showing for the majority of this  book while capturing newbloods. Which in the case  isn't  good like whatsoever. Like all of a sudden Mare and Cal like then love each other  in between  ten chapter.

Not to mention  she just is able to control  her powers. Despite repeatin   she is unable to with just a couple months of training  with it.  But it was enough to
kill queen  Elara
and not
save her brother
.

I don't  like this protagonist  at all especially  with how this book ends. Not after everything  she puts her family  through  despite  trying to be brave.
