I wanted to like this book more than I did. I love seeing representations of Acadie in literature, even better references. An artistic rendering and Sapphic romance seemed like an interesting premise, but overall the book book under delivers. The characters are not likeable, but also not interesting or nuanced in their unlike ability. This may be that the novel was super topical for its time, but some of the references took me out of my immersion. Although I thought I was reading a story about women in love, I feel like the male characters had more momentum and interest and the women instead used each other. A good novel that I was hoping would be better.

If I wanted to put up with mediocre insufferable men, I’d just go out and talk to any man. The most interesting part about this book was the sapphic relationship, and even then it was so minimal and had such an underwhelming development. Reading it felt like surviving off of crumbs. There were many aspects of the book that didn’t feel fleshed out such as the characters, their relationships and some of the event.
For example, the SA scene wasn’t talked about or addressed as much as it should have been. That scene alone could’ve been the center of its own book, with insights on the characters’ feelings and the impact of such events on their lives. The fact that it happened near the end of the book makes it seem random and only written for shock value. It felt like the author was checking off a list of issues to mention about the art world and decided to sprinkle SH for the sake of achieving a quota. Overall, it was a disappointing and boring read and totally not what I want out of a book about art school and academic rivalry. I’m far more interested in the concept of the obsessed artist and lethal academic rivalry than whatever the hell this book was.

I'm a sucker for literary academic novels, and this one fit the bill! I liked the setting of the art world, since I don't read very much in that sphere. The characters weren't particularly likable, but they were very real.
Also, Karina was essentially Paris Geller as an artist (I mean this as a compliment to Angress).
