i'm really torn up about the fact that i had to force myself to finish this book. i LOVE the first two installments, and this one really fell flat for me. not because the characters aren't good, not because it wasn't well written--because it was--but because the entire book felt completely unnecessary. i knew going into it that this was a different perspective on the same events from book 2, and i figured i would get an interesting insight into those events. i didn't. the entire middle section was book 2 in a different font. it was boring. (it literally makes me cringe to write that.) i will continue the series of course, i love DLJ, i love this series, this book just was not it.

4.5/5
I want to start by saying I have an affinity for this series. I think I just love how much thought has gone into the plots and the conflicts and the intricacies of the events in each book that regardless of things I don't like, I'm still going to enjoy these books. That being said, I only have a couple qualms with this one. One is that the love happened WAY to quicky for me. Sometimes I don't care about the insta-love trope, but in this case I would have appreciated more time spent on watching their relationship build. My only other tiny issue was that SOME of the retellings of where the story overlaps with The Traitor Queen could have been more brief since we already know what happens, but for the most part it was cool to see through another perspective. Other than those points though, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Danielle L. Jensen knows how to write incredible tension. Every book I find myself stressing out about what's going to happen, unable to put the book down until I find out; and the ending of this?? I will be diving into The Endless War with haste!
Also F*CK PETRA, I always thought she sucked but now I need someone to get her outta here ASAP.

This book has both Keris and Zarrah's POVs. Also some events are connected to what happened in The Traitor Queen so it made me stop reading it for a while. However, the last chapters made me want to finish it. Somehow, I enjoyed it.

Warning: There are some spicy scenes in this book.

A fun read but a little tedious/lacking in suspense at points since this book parallels the events of the previous book so closely throughout the second half. I do enjoy a good character growth arc though and I'm interested to see how Kerris evolves from this point on. I found Zarrah a little one-dimensional.

So good, I love the story of Keris and Zarrah, different than Lara and Aren, but still really good and engaging. Now I just have to wait for book 4
