3.5 starts! This was so refreshing and such a good book to change things up.
I won't lie the beginning had me scared and I couldn't read it in the dark! But I feel like that's why I liked it so much, the writing was so good I could actually picture everything going on and I loved it. Really good read and I'm glad I took a chance! Just enough romance to make me happy but not to much to make me feel like I didn't read anything different.

This is the first book in a series, but this is a spin-off that takes place after the events in the 9th book of the Experiment in Terror series. You do need to read those books (starting with [b:Darkhouse|11356211|Darkhouse (Experiment in Terror, #1)|Karina Halle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1602888946l/11356211._SY75_.jpg|16286238] all the way through [b:Dust to Dust|22892496|Dust to Dust (Experiment in Terror #9)|Karina Halle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1602890090l/22892496._SY75_.jpg|24566985]) before starting this one.

It's been five and a half years since I read [b:Dust to Dust|22892496|Dust to Dust (Experiment in Terror #9)|Karina Halle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1602890090l/22892496._SY75_.jpg|24566985], but I was still able to pick this right up without too many problems/questions. These books are about as close as I get to reading horror, which is something I generally avoid like the plague. Despite being decidedly creepy, I still like it despite all of that because these books definitely include adult-level relationships and romance. Granted, Ada is only 18 in this book, but it's very much a 'new adult' book instead of a 'young adult'.

I can't really explain this book without spoiling the original series, but I read this in a day. I am definitely going to continue on, but first I need to read the next books in the original series ([b:Ghosted|55892980|Ghosted (Experiment in Terror, #9.5)|Karina Halle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1605468551l/55892980._SY75_.jpg|87106960] and [b:Came Back Haunted|55618050|Came Back Haunted (Experiment in Terror #10)|Karina Halle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1602886940l/55618050._SY75_.jpg|86734082]) before I can read the next book in this series ([b:Song for the Dead|55918989|Song for the Dead (Ada Palomino, #2)|Karina Halle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1608656147l/55918989._SY75_.jpg|87130138]).

DNF 25%. Amateurish and needs a good editing for grammar and syntax. Just couldn't keep going.

I didn't read the series before this, because it was marketed as a standalone and you didn't need to read the series. I feel like you do, because there was some confusing parts that I feel like you would understand if you read the series

A little underwhelmed by Ada’s story starting off. I loved that we don’t have to wait 30 books for the romance to start really taking off BUT the beginning of the story felt slow and repetitive in the beginning. I am excited to see where it goes from here, though, because if Ada’s story is about “hunting” demons I think that’ll be a nice twist to the EIT universe.

I have no idea what I was reading. DNF. I can't even tell you what this book is about because there was too much going on.

This was a wonderful and exciting paranormal romance. I love all of Karina's writing and this is definitely at the top! You don't have to read EIT series to read this. After you read this I think you'll want to though! Thank you Karina for this book! My soul needed it!!
