This was such a great read, and I would absolutely recommend it! The blend of past and present timelines had me worried the story might feel disjointed, but instead, every time jump added to the excitement! I was initially skeptical about how Simone would weave together elements like WWII, a haunted boarding school, a murder, and a ghost, but she exceeded my expectations. Her research really shows she had a great plan when writing and she masterfully tied everything together. Each chapter felt like uncovering a new secret, with plot twists that caught me completely off guard.

The Broken Girls is a novel that is perhaps difficult to define. Part psychological thriller (think [b:Sharp Objects|18045891|Sharp Objects|Gillian Flynn|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1475695315s/18045891.jpg|3801]), part ghost story and part gothic-tinged drama.

It is little wonder that, when looking at the tropes and genres that make up Simone St. James’s The Broken Girls, I found this to be a gripping read, one that had me turning page after page to find out what happened and to uncover the world of the story. The way that the genres are combined are marvellous – it could easily feel contrived, focused more on the novelty of its premise but instead, I found it felt organic and natural. I suspect, though, that readers expecting a more straightforward read (ghost or mystery) might be thrown off by the combination of genres.

Overall, I found this well-written, engrossing and thoroughly readable.

3.5 rounded up. Everything seemed a little too easy, dual storylines are getting old, the ending was rushed, Fiona unlikeable, but still enjoyable, especially the 1950 parts.

Excellent all around. Spooky. Had no desire to skim any portions/no fluff. My only regret is not reading it during Halloween season -- would have been the perfect book for that time of year.

This had a lot going on.

Very interesting book... abit of a slow build up but then i really got into it
