The Broken Girls started off well with a spooky ghost, multiple timelines and murder but unfortunately it was a bit too mysterious with a few too many elements introduced and the breadcrumbs left behind meant it was hard to stay invested in the characters.
We have the ghost of Mary Hand, the story from the 1950’s and then Fiona’s story in 2014. How these stories link was the driving force which kept me reading as other elements became very predictable (fully predicted Sonia’s Story at 72%) but overall I was very disappointed.
Unfortunately these three plots were just that, three separate plots and Fiona’s impact on the past was pointless. She was such a nothing character for me I honestly think this would have been more interesting and better to have just the story of Mary Hand and the four girls from the 1950’s. It all just felt like the author had at least two book ideas but couldn’t fully form either of them so merged them.
I’ve also decided that I quite dislike the small town mentality/cop trope and if you don’t get what I mean by that then think Hot Fuzz and ‘The Greater Good’ vibes.
The Broken Girls is an easy read but the lack of follow through and the hot-pot of ideas really let it down.
