I hardly want to give this book (or collection of books, whatever) any stars.
I'd rather give this book "I-wish-I-had-never-picked-this-up" stars.
It gets one points for one thing, originality. The origin of the main character

and of all vampiresThat is the only positive I can bring myself to remember.
There were a number of things that just bugged me about this novel. I didn't get off to a good start,
Spoiler
I understand that Sita is thousands of years old, butSita, our leading lady, is a heartless sociopath, her proud descriptions and unabashed excitement at murdering people, breaking bones, stealing, etc. is stomach-turning. I could have looked past the lack of appeal the main character has--in fact, one might say she's very easy to hate, but another con of this book is that there is not a single character that is enjoyable. I literally walked away hoping for Pike to write in an Apocalypse and just end the story.
Spoiler
the only likeable character is Ray's girlfriend who gets treated like complete crapWhile the origin story is without holes and full of excitement, no other part of the book has these attributes. In fact,

the entire reason Sita goes back to high school, like she's a member of the friggin' Cullen clan, is ridiculous. 'I killed his father, and I must not let him know that, so I'm going to go become his best friend, seduce him, etc in the hopes that perhaps he knows his father's business passwords so I can find out who is looking for me, even though there can only possibly be one single, solitary person on the planet who could beThe action of the characters is so unrealistic
Spoiler
especially Sita's hot tub seduction of Ray, 'what kind of boy gets butt naked in a hot tub in an empty house with a girl you have known for an hour, who you think is strange and hiding things, appears older than you, when you have a girlfriend even the heartless vampire can see that you love and you father is missing? Not to even MENTION a few massacres, various strings of dead bodies and missing persons associated with you.I don't like warm and fluffy vampire novels to any degree, but this is the polar opposite and is also unbearable. Pike has written a plot that makes little sense acted out by characters that you hate all in a tone that is condescending, unemotional, and unappealing.
I don't think I'm going to be able to finish
this book. Size isn't usually an intimidating factor with a book, but having to sit through more than 20 pages of 'I am Perfect' description of the main character might make my eyes bleed.

Yes this is a vampire book but it has nothing to do with twilight. This series from the 1990's has a good twist on the concept of vampires and supernatural events.
Been awhile since I last picked this up.
Got it cheap at a bookfair if I'm not mistaken, a bit battered.
I liked it first/second read but realized that it is quite redundant, and abit lengthy.
Wouldn't read again however I have yet to complete the series

Someone asked me what's the worst book I've ever read. It's this one hands down. Nothing has ever come close.
I think twlight ruined vampires for me...I didnt really like this book. Please check out my short review on youtube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFYYnmNftOU
Awh, sweet nostalgia. I loved this books as a teen/pre-teen. I adored Christopher Pike.
Now, as a thirty-something, I was less impressed by the savior/superwoman/no-faults/rescuer that is Sita.
Everything was convenient. She did it all, she was so perfect it hurt.

This book is definitely different...
This story was old and new to me because it was about a vampire who fell in love, blah blah blah, but there was a certain depth because of the spirituality of Alisa AKA Sita. It was more about believing in God, in this case Krishna, than simply being a vampire. It was a story about pure faith and I, as a Christian, can relate to that.
The writing style was boring, stilted, and at the same time, amusing. Pike wrote as if he were writing a play, a really bad play; boring dialogue, broken trains of thought, and one liners that were very cheesy. I hated how Alisa describes how good she is at everything. I mean, I get it. You ARE a vampire.
I did not like Ray at all. He sucked as a human and he sucked as a vampire (no pun intended). He could not defend himself or Alisa or even stick up for his human girlfriend. Ray was a douche.
Even though this book was not Christopher Pike's best, I still enjoyed these novels. Granted, I only read them because of the author but the story stands out. I will read Vol. 2; partly because I am curious and also because I already bought vol. 2 and 3 at a sale. Oh well!
Hope it gets better.
