I guess I am not much of a fan of James Joyce's writing style. I wanted to like this but just couldn't finish it. I was listening to the audiobook and gave up on the last hour or so. I just wasn't holding my attention.

I tried to start this in high school and could not get into it. I retried in college and had an easier time, though I find Faulkner's stream of consciousness approach much more arresting and emotionally affecting than Joyce's.

Again, I wish I had time to finish this book. My teacher thinks that her class is the only class we have homework for. While not much "action" occurs in this book, I really felt ties to it that made me want to keep reading. I think it was the whole European Boarding School atmosphere that made me think of Harry Potter.

I'm very glad that I can finally add James Joyce to my reading experience. I appreciate his skill with creating a wide cast of characters and with helping the reader to step into turn-of-the-century Dublin. Joyce is clearly a master at painting characters with a few strokes that allow us to see their hopes, their fears, and their disappointments with life. That being said, neither of these stories really resonated with me. I enjoyed [b:Dubliners|11012|Dubliners|James Joyce|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1334138184s/11012.jpg|260248] more than [b:A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man|7588|A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man|James Joyce|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388201200s/7588.jpg|3298883], simply because the free-association type of writing in Portrait was harder for me to follow.
