I am surprised that this book isn't that well-known. It reminds me of these other well-known books in the same genre, just that this one is actually likeable for me.
We get to know very soon who the Courtess is who is most often referred as grandmother. Cruel and just outright mischievous. But that's exactly what makes the story interesting.
The ending was also interesting and literally crazy.
I also liked how we got an insight of the life's of the characters (for instance, Elizabeth) even though the story is quite short. It shows that the author showed an interest in including backstory and stuff to make the story more clear and understandable.
I didn't find a liking to Hermann as he was evil but for all the wrong reasons. And Elizabeth was just a stupid girl who fell for love and didn't see him being deceiving. That made me a bit annoyed honestly.
The wording was sometimes hard to understand but I know that it was used to make one feel like being actually in that time period when one reads it.
I made lots of notes to many small things, and it was a rollercoaster of emotions as there were some moments I was just like: Sc3w that! And the next one I was like: Let's gooo!

"As he stared at the card it seemed to him that the queen winked one eye at him mockingly."
Un texte classique de la littérature russe, par l’un des plus célèbres écrivains de ce pays. Bien écrit, intriguant, avec une finale un peu prévisible mais qui ne manque pas de charme. Une lecture plaisante avec un bon café.
