A little ponderous in the wilds of India. Too many coincidences. But a good escape.

I enjoyed having this take place in somewhere other than England for once! India made for an interesting setting and I enjoyed the story more because of it. I have been listening to the audio for this series and the narrator is wonderful.

It was lovely, unpredictable and totally Romantic.
I must say, in this novel I have read the WEIRDEST names ever!!!
I found the writing style very elegant even in intimate description which I do respect in a novel.
also, the short comings of the narrator (Julia) was very realistic and I loved when someone in the novel would point it out to her.
What I didn't like is that the investigation itself felt shallow, based on opinions and personal interpretation rather than objective observations and facts. moreover, the murder plot was not very convincing especially regarding who the killer was. Also, I have read the same plot end in one of Agatha Christi's Novel.

I really like Lady Julia Grey. I thought it a bit strange that the title scheme ("Silent in the...") was randomly abandoned, and I expected an abrupt change in style, but the main change was setting. Moving from England to India infused a bit of freshness in the series, as did a rather unique mystery for Brisbane and Lady Julia to solve. My main complaint? Why does she insist on referring to her husband by his surname?

Delightfully fun addition to the series with quite a few twists

I thought this was much better than #3, although the twists at the end were quite dark and disturbing.

For some reason I had a really difficult time getting into this book. Perhaps because I'd read all of the previous Julia Grey books in succession and I need a change. I'm taking a break from Deanna Raybourn...
Because this was a decent book. It just didn't excite me.

This might be my favorite Lady Julia novel. Raybourn creates such well-rounded characters in this series that I always feel like I am getting to spy on a real, if somewhat quirky, family. Both the familial and romantic relationships feel authentic and are really the heart of this novel. Thematically I might sum it up by say that loving is a painful joy. It is the depth of loving relationships that make this installment so moving. Warning: you will cry (at least I did)!
As with all the previous novels, the mystery at the center was inventive and the pacing well planned out. I never felt like Julia was being dense or missing the obvious, but I also didn't feel like the solution came out of left field.

This book just took me a while to get into and then I had trouble staying into the story. I enjoyed it overall, but it lacked the same pull as the previous Lady Julia books.
I'll be honest, I think a big part of my problem was the relationship between Julia and Brisbane.
Beyond Julia and Brisbane, I also felt as if the mystery plot spent a lot of time wallowing in not much at all. Yes, everyone has a motive, we get that. Did we need to revisit everyone's potential motive over and over with very little new info? It felt like a lot of filler. I did catch on early as to the culprit, but it took the book a long time to get there. Then, it threw in some other twists that seemed more than a little random.
I know this review is sounding as if the book was awful, and it wasn't. Really. I think it just suffersin comparison to the other books in the series. I will still be moving on to the next book/story.

It felt like they completely backslid to a previous state and then danced around the same stupidity over and over. The good news is that they did seem to reach a compromise by the end of the book, but then I felt this ground had been tread before, if not quite as much. Sometimes I think authors create disharmony between romantic interests after they've gotten together for the sake of it. I know in real life there would be strife, such is the nature of relationships. This just rung hollow and I found it disappointing.Beyond Julia and Brisbane, I also felt as if the mystery plot spent a lot of time wallowing in not much at all. Not too bad. I love the protagonist and narrator, and I'm glad to see that Raybourn has continued to find complexity and drama in the relationship between Lady Julia and Brisbane even after their marriage. The mystery was gripping, with a surprising outcome.
Still, it's a good read, and I rushed over to the library to pick up the next installment.

The only thing that bothered me was the death at the very end of the book. I thought "OH NO! What are you doing! Haven't we dealt with enough already?" and had to walk away from the book for a full day before I could read the rest (I told myself it was because I was busy with year-end chores, but I knew the truth: I felt sadly abused by the author).Still, it's a good read, and I rushed over to the library to pick up the next installment.
