I almost put this book away several times. If it weren't for a college professor that once encourage us to hate a book to completion I would have. If it hadn't ended the way it did I probably would have been forced to do something drastic to get it away from me.
3 stars because I don’t know what to do. At times I hated this book, then the story would take a turn and I would read 100 pages. I’m feeling very torn so I’m rating this right down the middle.
Horrible.. Just..Bad. I liked The Other Boylen Girl, and The Queen's Fool, so when i picked this one up i figured it would be of similar quality. Now I'm by no means prudish, and have a relatively high tolerance for Bdsm and other fetishes. But the amount of just Incest and gross unneeded events was WAY to high. I defiantly wanted to give my brain a long shower after i read it, and desperately wish that i had not even bothered reading this.
These people are fucking HORRIBLE, but what a page turner :P
Beatrice seems to have an infinite means of making herself and those around her miserable or worse. Ultimately, the thing that I cannot forgive the character Beatrice for is destroying Wideacre. It utterly defeats the purpose of her scheming. I also hated that she thought herself superior and to Ralph and the villagers of Acre and was willing to starve them. Also, if either she could inherit, she did not reject Ralph because he was not quality, or so many other instances would have made the course of the book less terrible.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Philippa Gregory’s later historical fiction but this one was so hard to stomach. There never was a less likable character and I only continued with it in the hopes that she would meet the ending she deserved.
Disturbing good read. Emotional journey of sympathy for the heroine to utter disgust, but with some twisted level of understanding her predicament and hope for her children.
This book was kind of wild. Although you don't love Beatrice (by any means... how could you?) she really loves her home and her land, and will do anything to keep it.
My favorite part about this book was reading the story through the perspective of the "villain" and following her twisted thought process. It's an interesting read, you will probably either love it or hate it.

medium-paced
If I could give less than one star I would. Hungry for more after The Other Boleyn Girl, I tried this book. UGH. Talk about a crap sandwich, this has first novel written all over it. Can be compared to [b:Gone with the Wind|18405|Gone With The Wind|Margaret Mitchell|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166913011s/18405.jpg|3358283] (which I actually kind of like), this terrible book has the worst main character EVER. So tedious, because it reads like a bad soap opera. I couldn't even finish this one because it was so horrible.
