A lovely collection of short stories that imparts some lesson to the reader; Danticat does a great job creating rich, descriptive characters and beautiful scenes.

It seethed and boiled, it was a peephole into the characters’ lives.
Maybe you will be hurt by the stories and certainly there are tales to trigger you among these, but it is so beautifully written, you will be taken in.
The stories are life, and written in a poetic way, I swirled the rhythm around in my mouth as I read, as much to know what happened each time as to revel in its beauty.

A solid collection of short stories but really not much stands out or will be memorable from it.

My second short story collection I read this month- these stories were more or less like character introspections which are generally not in my wheelhouse. I listened to it on audio and the narrator does an excellent job.

These stories take the reader inside the experience of people who have been displaced and who are longing for home, in whatever way they can find it.

I struggled with this book because the short stories were so... bad. They never fit the premises for what a short story should be or how it should make readers feel *something* after reading them. They were just completely meh. The only one I liked was ‘Sunrise, Sunset’, the rest were just not good. A short story book should be a fairly easy read, and this one was just not it.

This is my first work of Edwidge Danticat’s and I absolutely loved it. The stories caused you to reflect on so many aspects of life and the himan condition and in several cases against the background of the Haitian Diaspora. Beautiful collection of short stories.
