In the beginning this felt like it might be a DNF for me. The pacing was slow and I was having a difficult time connecting to the characters. I am, however, really glad that I stuck with it. There were some really raw and beautiful moments throughout about Ming grappling with her transition and also about Tom and Ming having so much love for each other and yet not being the thing either can have.

There was a line in book in which Ming talks about feelings as though they transitioned into loneliness and it really felt like a punch in the gut. Ming may have felt that way about a physical transition and yet it's so human to feel as though we have changed in some way and not everyone who was with us before has come to that new version alongside us. It's heartbreaking and so raw and real.

dnf'ed at chapter 9 (36%). the pacing is sooooo off it's so hard to connect to these characters. i don't care about the texture of the food, how the house looks from front to back, et cetera i wanna actually get to know these people, you know? also the time skips don't make sense to me: they make tom and ming's relationship feel very unauthentic. also i don't see the spark between them at all. overall a very tedious book.

this is one of those books where if you don't like slow, little plot, heavily character-focused stories, you won't enjoy the book. and i thoroughly enjoyed this!! the writing style gripped me from the beginning, i really enjoyed how flawed the characters were and how it was messy and real and human. i sped through this. overall beautiful and utterly upsetting. my cup of tea.
rob was my favourite character & i was not expecting that ending 💔
. i think it's a really interesting relationship dynamic and one i hadn't really thought about before but is very important to share. i enjoyed the way queerness is explored, and it was nice to read about characters my age
