In the afterword Lisa Stringfellow tells us about how she wanted to write a book that she would've enjoyed reading when she was a child, and while I am not her, I think that she succeeded wonderfully. This pleasantly reminds me of books that I would've seen and read off the shelves of my classroom libraries in elementary school, especially with this cover, no mention of smartphone devices, and adventure/magic, except that it would've had two things I craved at the time: a main character who isn't white, and a story in which culture and family are interwoven with adventure.

I would recommend this to any juvenile fiction readers who enjoy mermaids, but also children who are struggling with grief and guilt. While we don't like to think about children having to deal with these feelings, the reality is that they do and always have, and it is unfortunately even more pronounced due to covid and current world events. This book is upfront about the fact that grief unbalances our emotions and our relationships, but that we can move on together and free ourselves while not forgetting our loved ones.
