This was cute! Nothing groundbreaking, but well-written and easy to follow along with. I also liked the themes around gender and being true to yourself.

LOVE a lesbian sports romcom so yessss
And the cheerleader/quarterback trope was so fucking satisfying

It overall felt fast but hey it was a hell of a fun read and certainly got emotional there for a bit

Listened on a road trip, in series with another YA queer romance of Adler's. They were both fun, breezy, cute reads. It's always interesting to notice themes that authors keep coming back to; both of these books feature protagonists who are popular in their schools, struggling with a queer identity they don't fully understand, deciding whether or not to come out, and navigating complex relationships with their straight friends. They're both estranged from their fathers and very close with their single mothers. Both books conclude just after homecoming, and feature football players and games as major plot elements.

Those are all striking similarities but I don't mean to suggest the books are carbon copies, overly formulaic, or that there aren't major differences between them, it's just interesting to note. The situation in Home Field Advantage is a little more drastic than in Cool For The Summer, where the stakes are really just Larissa's own journey of discovery; in this book, Jack and Amber's friend Miguel face homophobia that is never quite violent but isn't far off, and both Jack and Amber risk losing relationships that are very important to them, in addition to the possibility of giving up on dreams they've pursued for a long time. That also isn't to say I think Home Field Advantage is a better book; they're both fun, YAish romance stories, just with different tones and themes.

One thing I really liked about this book is Amber's relationship with her childhood best friend Cara, who is at times vindictive and even bigoted but who Amber refuses to give up on completely. It's an interesting relationship that is allowed to be messy and complicated, without a clear right answer or a catharsis that clears everything up or lets you feel completely one way or another about it.

super cute but damn they had to deal with so much homophobia

Solo una storia del genere può convincermi a informarmi sul football e sugli schemi di gioco per poi spiegarli entusiasta alle mie amiche. Divertente & tenero come una commedia romantica di La5
