I really wanted to like and enjoy this book. It's been on my TBR for years, as I love a queer sports romance, but I was severely disappointed in the writing itself. It felt very childish to be a young adult book. The vulgar language felt forced, some of the character's choices were off, and I really would've liked to see more from the story in general. Maybe I'm not up to date with the "Young Adults" terminology now-a-days, and don't keep up with them as much anymore. . .

The whole story is a cute idea, like I love a wlw football player x cheerleader relationship, don't get me wrong. I'm always on board to reading one of those stories. This one just wasn't my thing unfortunately.

okay so i feel the need to amend my review after my second reread:

this story is first and foremost a story of misogyny. jack walsh is the victim of discrimination not just by her own team and coach, but by the rest of the school. throughout the novel she is put in horrible situations and is forced to suffer almost entirely on her own.

i found it hard to sympathize with miguel and amber after seeing how much jack consistently had to suffer without their support. amber and miguel constantly made selfish decisions to protect themselves, hurting jack in the process. i understand. they are kids. they don’t know how to deal with this really tough situation. but it didn’t stop me from being frustrated for jack.

i truly think that amber grew throughout the novel. i think she recognized how she contributed to a toxic culture which caused jack to be ruthlessly bullied. i liked the way that she stood up for her to cara and the rest of her team. but it was hard to look past how selfish she had been. again she is a kid, and i understand that. but i feel like in amber’s redemption arc, we forgot about the true victim in this situation.

im sorry, but miguel was sort of insufferable. i do not understand the correlation between not wanting to out himself and standing up against his misogynistic teammates. he allowed the team to treat jack so badly throughout the novel, so much so she was physically assaulted by one of them. as much as i understand the fact that he was scared, i just don’t see what he had to lose by standing up for jack besides not wanting to be a social pariah. robbie is so longer there to blackmail him. how would being jack’s friend out him? i just don’t understand. besides the very end, miguel was a horrible friend to jack. he let her down every time. every. single. time.

i wish there was a more satisfying ending to this story. it has been established that jack being a good player does not stop her teammates from being misogynistic. i don’t know how her homecoming performance would change anything for her situation. i know it’s probably realistic that she would continue to be ousted; however, didn’t seem to me that the author was trying to make that point. so, i don’t really know what ultimately changed for jack. she only has one person in her corner, and that is amber.

i think it’s pretty clear that i love jack. i really do. she deserved so much better from the people who claimed to be her friends. she was so incredibly brave and strong considering what she went through. i wish this whole story was from her perspective.

i did like the relationship between amber and jack. i thought that they had pretty good chemistry from pretty much the beginning. again, i wish that amber had been more supportive from the start, but i thought her growth by the end spoke for itself.

all in all, i did enjoy this book. what originally sets itself up as a fluffy romance turned out to be far from it. but i did enjoy it nonetheless. i am decreasing my star rating from 4 to 3 stars (sadly
