This was my first ever manga and I absolutely loved it. It made me very sick to my stomach at many points, but I was totally expecting that, so it was fine. The art is as gorgeous and detailed as it is grotesque. Every page had my eyes wide with terror, wonder, disgust, and sometimes all of those things at once. Though it's a thick book, it's a very fast read and I definitely recommend it to other people who don't have a lot of experience with manga. I think this is the beginning of my terrifying but beautiful journey with Junji Ito's work.

CW: body horror, gore, insects, parental death, child death, abuse, bullying, cannibalism (ish??)
Junji Ito never met a body he didn't want to horror.
Similarly to Tomie, I feel some kind of way about how so many of these adult men treat Kirie, who is a child. But on the other hand - visuals cannot be beat!

Immediately you can see how detailed and well done the art is. It can go from something beautiful to something twisted in the span of a panel. Ito is known for his body horror, so expect nothing less here, as that is a main component of the story.
Unfortunately, the characters themselves feel quite bland. They never really develop a personality. I wanted to feel invested in them and their fates at least a little, but just never really could.
The art is ultimately what shines here, as the story is just ok. The spirals are interesting, and how they are incorporated into the art is mesmerizing. We never really get an explanation for what's going on though, but I think the ending is fitting. Considering all of this, it was just an average read for me in the end.

Moderate: Pregnancy and Bullying
