Interesting story with lots of disturbing  imagery. The back half had some slower moment but overall it’s an enjoyable story if you like creepy/horror stuff

...I didn't like it at all. It's obviously made with great care, but I didn't find the tale to be scary - just extremely disturbing in a way that left me sick to my stomach. My personal enjoyment of this graphic novel was so nonexistent that I can't rate it any higher than two stars.

Besides, Shuichi had the right idea on page 14 of this 600+ page monstrosity. They should have left town the moment all that weird crap started happening, when they probably still could have. There was zero excuse for not getting the hell out after the thing with the kiln. Stay in a place like that, you deserve what you get.

One of Ito Junji's best works. Uzumaki delivers on excellently paced horror.

Similarly to Stephen King, Ito Junji manages to make seemingly mundane items, like a spiral, utterly terrifying. Through small events, he tells the sorry of a town consumed by the obsession of the spiral. The story is gripping and the illustrations are incredibly well done. I love the levels of detail. It really ups how creepy some imagery is.

This author has a few topics he loves to come back to for all his work. I believe for this one obsession to the point of self-harm is the main theme being interrogated.

Since this story is much longer than his one-shots, he has the chance to develop some of his characters. Although this story is much more plot-driven than characters driven, I am always surprised at how real and interesting his characters, good o evil, can be. They don't fall in the common horror tropes of just making really stupid decisions or not having clear goals but moving the plot along. I can easily see them as full characters and understand their plight. I find myself not screaming at them for their bad choices, but lamenting how even they try their best, even the "bad" ones, end up in terrible situations.

Some chapters feel a little filler. However, it is not always clear which ones. I was shocked at how some chapters I thought were unimportant, played a key role in the end.

I don't love his endings all the time, but I think this one was great. Almost bittersweet.
I think this is a great first read for anybody who wants to get familiar with his work.

All I have to say is AHHHHHHHHH 🫣

(To clarify, I loved it. Horrific, disgusting, beautiful and hypnotic like the spirals you WON'T STOP SEEING after you finish this. 10/10 recommend for quality nightmares).

spiraled out of control, spiraled into madness, as this developed it was only a downward spiral and other spiral jokes that i need to get out of my system

i love a wholesome sibling relationship even if
it ends with the brother becoming a snail which was probably the most devastating part of this story
