WOWWW this is my first time reading a full book of Junji Ito’s work, and I’m so glad I finally got around to it. completely understand the hype—his work is both beautiful and horrifying, often at the same time ! on one hand, I never expected to get jumpscared by the flip of a page lol ! on the other hand, I would love to find prints of some of these panels to display in my home because they’re just that stunning ! devoured this in a few days because I was so absorbed into the plot, and will DEFINITELY be looking into his other works !

The art is immaculate, but the story is kind of eh... Junji Ito is amazing at creating gross terrifying scenarios, but there is not much coherence or satisfying conclusion. After reading Gyo and Uzumaki I feel like even though I'm easily grossed out and body horror is not a type of thing I actively look for, after few shocking moments you can get used to Ito's style and the horror is not as impactful.

So there is the shock by gore, but not shock by the narrative itself because there is not much to grab in terms of storytelling. I think that Junji Ito could reach the full potential with someone else's writing because he's definitely a master in his drawing, and he can match his f-up imagination with an artistic skill, there's just something missing to push the story to the finish line.

My first Junji Ito read and I really enjoyed it. Probably one of the grossest and bizarre things I’ve ever read. I really love Ito’s technical skill and how he draws his  characters, scenes, and the body horror—some panels genuinely scared me, and I’m the type of person who doesn’t jump at jump scares in horror movies.

...I didn't like it at all. It's obviously made with great care, but I didn't find the tale to be scary - just extremely disturbing in a way that left me sick to my stomach. My personal enjoyment of this graphic novel was so nonexistent that I can't rate it any higher than two stars.

Besides, Shuichi had the right idea on page 14 of this 600+ page monstrosity. They should have left town the moment all that weird crap started happening, when they probably still could have. There was zero excuse for not getting the hell out after the thing with the kiln. Stay in a place like that, you deserve what you get.
