Un monde dystopique complexe et bien construit, une intrigue riche et prometteuse. Il me tarde de me procurer le deuxième volume! Il y avait longtemps que je n'avais été à ce point prise par de la science-fiction!

Greg Rucka has created an ambitious and interesting world with Lazarus. It's a time in the future when resources are owned by corporations, or Families. Those who help foster the resources are known as Serfs. Those who offer nothing are known as Waste. Each family has a cyborg protector, known as a Lazarus.

Forever is the Lazarus for the Carlyle family. The story opens on her corpse, shortly after she's been mortally wounded. Shortly after this happens, she heals and takes out the 3 men who thought they had killed her. It's a pretty cool opening scene.

There are some secrets that Forever doesn't know, and we barely begin to understand before the end of the graphic novel. One thing that we do know is that she is not liked by everyone in her family, and she may be used as a pawn to start a war with a rival Family.

It's a great story, and a really great set up for an interesting series. Forever is a great character and I see an interesting road ahead for her and this series. Art by Michael Lark is perfect for the series. Greg Rucka's story is superb. Highly recommended.

I was given a copy of this graphic novel by Diamond Book Distributors and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to read this top notch graphic novel.

I was somewhat pulled in by the main character although overall it is not the style of story or illustrations that pull me in.

This is a graphic novel that's been on my radar for a looooooong time. So long I wasn't sure it would live up to the expectations I had for it. I am so happy to be wrong! LAZARUS is EXCELLENT in every way. The action is rough and visceral. The world building is inventive. The characters are flawed. Forever is a hero you instantly fall in love with. There are shady bargains and betrayals and intricate plots. The art is straight out of an action movie. I was completely hooked from beginning to end, and can see myself reading the rest of the books in a single night. Absolutely something to check out if you like strong women fighting in a post-apocalyptic world!

Forever “Eve” Carlyle, the defender, the sword, and the Lazarus of the Carlyle family. “To disobey me is to die. To strike me is to die.”

I read this on the recommendation of my papa after talking to him about the genetically engineered soldiers within the Lunar Chronicles. I’m glad to say I enjoyed it a lot! He usually doesn’t steer me wrong. :)

I was immediately intrigued by Eve and her relationship to her family as a Lazarus - genetically engineered to be stronger, better than her siblings. It’s a dramatic irony that we see how she has never been fully accepted by her family despite her dedication to them. Nonetheless, I love seeing the strength within Eve as a protagonist, the badass qualities. She has a strong sense of morals and isn’t scared to stick to them. An honorable trait.

I can’t wait to see Eve’s relationship to the other Lazari; especially Joacquim. She relates more to them than her own family, it seems. There is an understanding there that transcends the family boundary lines.

I really enjoy stuff that tackles the eventuality of genetic engineering within children and how our perspectives could shift along a spectrum: accepting them and loving them as our own, or (as in this case) always being aware of their other-ness and keeping them at arm’s distance. Trusting vs Doubting this new form of humanity. Would this fall under transhumanism? Potentially... I think so.

Anyway. This is a very strong start and I hope it only gets better as the series continues!

Fantastic vision of a post-apocalyptic family that is truly post-family.

It's a somewhat interesting premise and start to the tale--though similar to the recent series Altered Carbon--but it's not quite as deep or compelling as advertised. The Rucka team seems to have more leftist sensibilities than frauds like Tom King or (slightly interesting) hacks like Mark Millar, but it's not all that well explicated. It could be something that I eventually grow to love, but I am not certain at this point if I will pick up volume two.

I enjoyed this first volume. I was not sure I would like it considering how the comic series looks violent. It definitely was gory and pretty violent but I loved the post apocalyptic setting, Lazarus, family dynamics and politics. Best part was not knowing who was lying and manipulating Lazarus for what reason. She doesn’t seem to be having anyone in her life whom she can trust. She belongs to a family and she is supposed to protect them, but is the family manipulating her? I will only know that after reading the other volumes. I am definitely planning to continue with the series. The artwork was good. If I like the next couple of volumes, I am planning to buy a copy of this book as well.
What I don’t know is what exactly a Lazarus is and why they cannot be killed easily by humans? In one of the scenes, they looked like they had a metal body. Are they AI/robots programmed to kill others and protect family or some genetically modified human? I have plenty of questions after finishing this volume.
The main protagonist is a pretty kickass woman.
