Riley is visually impaired and needs a new live-in support worker. Harper has fled his home following the latest assault and rape by his (now ex) partner.

This is a tender, loving story about two men who are dealing with the circumstances they find themselves in. There is chemistry between the main characters. They are boss and employee, then friends, then lovers.

There were lighter, funny bits which were appreciated in a story with dealt with such serious topics as domestic violence.

As someone with a disability, I’m always a little wary of stories involving disabled characters, because I imagine it can be difficult to write with the appropriate sensitivity and empathy. While I am not visually impaired, the depiction of what Riley was experiencing seemed well done.

Similarly, the aftermath of the assault on Harper was handled well and didn’t feel like it was being sensationalised for the readers’ titillation.

I loved Riley’s frivolous, fun nature, and Harper’s sensitivity. I also loved Larry.

There is a content warning at the beginning of the book which I appreciated.

4.5. Started off brilliant. Riley was a hilarious character. The audiobook was really well done. But the story kind of stuttered three quarters through.

This is one of two books with vision impairedness rep recently! In this instance, Riley has been in an accident that has been taking his vision-- every now and then he has a very short moment of tunnel vision when he wakes, but doctors assure him he will one day wake up fully blind.

Through a company that helps people with disabilities, he meets Harper. Harper is a specialist in vision therapy, and is there to be a live in helper. Which is great, because he finds himself just a little bit homeless and on the run from an abusive ex.

There's also a many-named dog. An ugly one. He's perfect.

If you can handle a bit of hurt/comfort, I highly recommend this book about learning independence and when to accept help! Dianna Roman is a knockout author-- not one miss so far. Check it out!!
