Honestly I think this book just wasn't for me. The mystery itself was good, but Cormoran Strike himself was pretty much everything I dislike about a lot of detective fiction. The gender politics in this were pretty gross, tbh.

The story was good but I felt as though the writing itself was more juvenile, a child playing in a grown-up world. I don't know if this is because I am so familiar with Harry Potter and the style of writing used there (and in that format it's acceptable and even humorous) but for some reason I struggled to get past the fact that it was rather repetitive and I kept expecting Professor McGonagall to pop up!

A very solid and enjoyable book with an appealing group of characters and a satisfying plot. Will be picking up the second one as soon as I can.

I found the style of this first book a bit dull and overly conversation-driven, but the finale was intriguing and made up for the lackluster middle. It was a clever ending.
