I liked it. It was fun start in Alvin's life. The magic system seemed mysterious but at the same time logical part of the world. At least for its users the magic seemed the most natural thing. I though that was pretty interesting.
The plot was ok but not really the main thing in the book. The focus was more on building the characters and the world, and I think this book did pretty good job. It felt like prologue though. Good thing I have the next book in the shelf waiting.
I am not American thus I know close to nothing about their history. For me, instead of "alternative history", world seems more like inspired by the past world with some familiar names.

Not my favorite Orson Scott Card by a long shot. I can see from this that the Alvin Maker series has potential, and I will keep reading it, but this book was disappointingly sparse. It felt more like an overgrown short story or, at best, a tease of a novella.

Overall, I love Orson Scott Cards writing and this book was really well done. While I think some of the big ideas are very confusing, I think that overall, it will come together really well. I definitely need to read the next book!

Great character building, but it felt like the first half of a book, not an entire novel. Waited for a climax that never came.
