became a hard read towards the end as the motives of the protagonist simply stopped making sense to me but on average the reading experience was enjoyable and very insightful, gave me a view to a history I knew little about
I loved this book! However, I really don’t think the abortion storyline fit into it at all. It really distracted from the true theme and story.
What can I say? Gripping story, well told, not just about the suffering of Sarah, but also about how the effects of those who suffered, and those who tried to forget, are alive till today.
A must read.
A must read.
I thought this was a really good book! It's kind of two stories in one with the first taking place in France during the Holocaust and the other in present day France. I liked how the two stories were linked. Of course, the story of "Sarah" and the "key" was very disturbing as it is told from a 10 year old jewish girl's perspective. I think that makes the story all the more difficult to read since she is so innocent at the beginning and then her world just falls apart. I recommend it!
I thought this was a beautiful book. I loved how the two stories intertwined. I did not like Julia, which was sort of an issue seeing as how she is the main storyteller. I adored reading Sarah's parts of the story and was disappointed when the part from her point of view ended, though the end was fitting. I felt that, while Julia's journey was very interesting, she was not a person I would ever want to spend time with. She was so filled with self pity. And while her husband wasn't exactly a stellar guy, I did find myself liking him, wishing he were in more of the book, and certainly feeling sorry for him when Julia selfishly won't *spoiler* give him the time of day regarding his opinion on the baby, which was absolutely justified. I liked the people Julia interacted with, which is what made her part of the book bearable. The history was fascinating and certainly something I knew nothing about, and it definitely gives me a lot to think about because I had family who lived through the Vel d'Hiv roundup. Scary stuff. Gorgeous story, aside from Julia being too woe-is-me for my taste.
Time for a happy book!

And with that, I am officially done with all the readings for my Into to Fiction class
I don't think I learned anything about fiction
But this book wasn't awful so let's give my teacher some credit. Just ignore my newly found hatred for Dr. Jenkyll and Mr. Hyde.

I read this book a couple years ago after the movie came out. I saw a preview for the movie and had to see it. I saw the movie and was blown away, I absolutely LOVED the movie, so I had to read the book. I've read this book twice since then and I love it, still love the movie. The book is different, it goes in a different direction than the movie. The story line itself is amazing and I read it very quickly, I couldn't put it down. It's about a little girl who, with her mom, are taken away to be sent to a camp. The little girl locks her brother in a hidden closet so that he'll be safe when their dad gets back. The mom and little girl are taken away and they run into the dad coming back from town, so all three are taken away leaving the little boy locked in the closet. It's an incredible story about what this little girl goes through trying to save her brother. It also flashes back and forth between the past and present time with a reporter doing a story on the anniversary of that day when the French soldiers rounded up all the Jews to send them away. The reporter's husband also happens to own the apartment that Sarah and her family lived in before they were taken away. So the reporter finds out what happened to Sarah and her family. It's really an amazing read, I highly recommend it anyone!
When I'm asked about the most emotionally devastating book I've ever read, this is the one I answer that question with. It is one of my favorite books yet it broke my heart
I think one's psyche can only take two books per year on the Holocaust. Sarah's Key, just like In the Garden of Beasts, was excellent - and exceptionally heartbreaking.
Fantastic book!It was quite an eye-opener for me in regards to the concentration camps in France.Sarah's storyline is quite heartwrenching and I loved loved Sarah. But gotta say I loved Julia alot more. I know this book is in many of my friends to-read list so not gonna give anything away. But if you love historical fiction based on the holocaust with a feminine touch, you gotta read it.
Thanks to my MIL for recommending it! :)
