The Vel D'Hiv was not something I ever learned in school. It was heartbreaking to read about. I loved Sarah's story and looked forward to the chapters with her in them. My grandmother is French and Jewish and now I want to find out more about her in this time. I know her family left Paris either before or early in the war.
I liked the Julia story, but felt that it dragged down the Sarah story some.
Still, a good book to read. It makes you think and makes you gasp in horror at the things people can and did do to one another.

Interesting to learn about the French police's role in the persecution of Jews during World War II
The best book I've read in a long time. Hooked me from the start. I had studied some of the French holocaust for my final paper for my minor in college but did not remember the Vel d'Hiv atrocity. This book shares lessons, places the reader in every set of footprints. It's amazing.

first half (with Sarah's perspective) was a little more interesting, and by the end I kind of saw where the story was going, but it was a pretty good book that makes you remember
This book is intense! I started it yesterday and read almost the entire book in one sitting. It is a novel set in Paris, split between 1942 and the 2000s, and based on the historical event of the Vel d'Hiv roundup of French Jews, by the French government. The story is captivating, beautiful, and devastating. I highly recommend it.
