Hate romance... I think this is a new favorite genre of mine. Love... Hate... Love... HATE. Push and pull...
I wasn't sure where this book would go. Some might say it's a little cliche'. Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. For me, even if I thought it was, it is told in the best possible way. The angst. The magnetic pull. The ups. The downs. The laughs. Oh, the laughs. I didn't want to put this story down.
These are some wonderful characters. They aren't over done. They are likable and relate-able. Their story isn't over the top. It is told just the right way.
I was sad to see this story end. It was such a refreshing read. So well-written. So sweet and not so sweet... the perfect combination.

I've always enjoyed reading Nicole Williams, but 2016 was such a breakout year for her. She began with a powerhouse in The Fable of Us, then delivered one of my top reads of 2016 with Collared, wrote two other solid books, and ended with an emotional but heartwarming tale in Hate Story. This book has all the feels, and I wasn't prepared for how captivating and emotional the story was, as it unfolded. If you are looking for the perfect romance to end 2016, I highly recommend this one.
I've seen this trope in movies several times but haven't read many books that feature money for marriage. I went in expecting more "hate" but realized right away it was going to be difficult not to adore Nina and Max. Nina has an old soul, and I felt immediately drawn to her despite her somewhat bleak outlook on life and love. While Max appears to be arrogant and closed off, once his POV chapters started, I quickly changed my opinion. The two of them have the best banter and their chemistry is intense. I couldn't stop smiling at their antics, and the pages flew by as these two started their fake relationship.
"Save the flowers, save the poetry. Clean up a pile of dog crap for me or fix the whiney hinges on my front door, and I'm a goner."
Of course, what starts as one thing can slowly turn into another. Max and Nina begin to reveal themselves and their true feelings start to emerge. I adored the push/pull of their relationship. It was never rushed or frustrating; it is romance perfection. In addition, there is an interesting and entertaining supporting cast that rounded out Nina and Max's lives. I read this book in one evening because I was unable to put it aside for a moment.
"I will always do what's best for you, even if it means you wind up hating me."
I cannot wait for whatever Nicole Williams writes in 2017. She has become one of my favorite go to authors. She can make me cry, laugh, and swoon with ease and continues to amaze with her interesting storylines that always have heart and soul.

5 beautifully angsty stars
This was literally so cute I fckn loved it. I loooooove all the angsty-ness that happened. Max and Nina were perfect. I think Max may be one of my favourite H's and Nina was luckily almost never annoying. Her motivations were always pretty clear and I thought she was a nicely rounded character.

Spoiler
Uggh when it was their engagement day and he planned a whole outing with her photographs and everything and then she had to go to work and then SHE NEVER FOUND OUT HE PLANNED IT??? I was in tears gawdSpoiler
except that time after they first had sex and she was avoiding him? I understood the motivation but her behaviour didn't seem to quite fit the feelingsSpoiler
Okay seriously though, H's who can't get over the h and end up all disheveled and in dive bars when they're trying (and failing) to move on are my FAVOURITE kind of H. Max was perfect
Nicole Williams has been a favorite of mine since she published her first book. I've been thoroughly enchanted and drawn in by each book she writes. Hate Story, although not what I was really expecting given the title, was another one of her works to chalk up as a great read.
Marriage of Convenience books are pretty much a dime a dozen in the romance world. Nicole put her own spin on this age old trope and breathed new life into a sometimes overdone plot.
I was expecting a ton of angst, because, frankly I can never have enough angst in my books. Hate Story didn't have the level I expected. You know what? It really didn't need it. It was so well done, I didn't miss it.
I loved that we got dual POVs from the hero and heroine. It added more depth to their story. My favorite parts were the humor added in. All in all, Hate Story was a well rounded, easy, quick read that kept me engaged and left me with a smile on my face when I finished.

Wholly unrealistic, in my mind at least, but it was cute and well written so I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I stopped at 25%. Just couldn't get into the story. I might try again later.
