Gorgeous art. Took a while to get going but I think I'm really going to like this series.

One of my favorite series ever. I love the manga and the anime. The characters are amazing and dynamic and wonderful, and Tamahome is adorable.
4/5 on here, 9/10 for myself

This is a great story that spanned so many volumes! I read this so long ago and even now am happy to go back and read it all over again. I loved the romance here and was such a crazy fan that I got the editions where they put three volumes into one book which was really great and convenient.

I watched the anime like 10 - 12 years ago I don't remember much but I remember loving it so I decided to pick it up , love the artwork, I still don't know how I feel about it.

Yuu Watase's artwork is so gorgeous that it makes me want to weep, and gets one star solely for that. However, I wasn't really feeling this series. I don't believe in this "love at first sight" bullshit Miaka has for Tamahome, or Hotohori for Miaka. I just don't. The only romantic relationship which has an explanation is the fake one between Tamahome and Nuriko, since Nuriko is a conniving fucking nutcase and isn't actually in love with Tamahome.
There were blatant spelling mistakes as well, which irritated me. Also, Yui managed to get into the book the first time around. Whatever happens to Miaka in Ancient China affects Yui in Present-Day Japan. Something tells me that Yui is the true Priestess of Suzaku, but that's just my theory.
Also, does Yui seem a little Mary-Sue-ish to anyone else? I mean, she doesn't have to study for exams because she's THAT smart that she just remembers and understands everything right off the bat? I fucking wish.
Maybe I'll continue this series one day, just to see how it pans out. Until then, I've got better books to read.

This one's fairly in the middle for me at 3 stars. This is my second read through of the series, as I didn't have a goodreads account the first time I read through it.
The art is good, the concept is interesting. The only failing is that the characters have no real depth yet in this first book aside from Miaka having different opinions about which school to go to than her mother, which is probably the most relatable thing in this manga. Obviously, I know it gets deeper and the characters get more interesting than just potential love interests and love adversaries, but I hadn't realized how shallow this first one was. I remember it being fun when I was in my teens though! And seriously, that art is super pretty.
