This book was just not as good as the first. I hated the first 35% , it truly just felt like trauma porn and I wished it happened a little bit sooner. The middle of this book though, obsessed with. When she escapes, gets found and is like healing and scheming to kill everyone, loved it. Then the last like 10/15% it was getting repetitive. They have an insane fuck, they brutally kill someone. Like my biggest grife with this book is they didn’t just love fuck once. It always had to be insanely graphic, like have sincere scene please.

The sex just started to add nothing to the story and by the time I reached the end it felt anti climactic.

2⭐️4🌶️(different type of spice than book 1, not in a positive way)
I read an article a few years ago about the show the handmaid’s tale being torture porn. I felt similarly about this book, specifically part 1. I almost DNFed 20% in bc of this and I have never DNFed anything before. Honestly, I’m not sure even sure how these books got published, the torture part of the book is that graphic. I think it probably could’ve been on wattpad and I would’ve been less shocked reading it on there. If you’re looking for a romance, this is not the series for you. Almost every single spicy scene in book 2
uses blood/knife play, which was a little heavy for me. I was disappointed there was almost no sweet reunion between the main characters.
This book deals HEAVILY on the trauma Addie faces during and after
she has been abducted into a sex trafficking ring.
I liked zade’s character development in this book, and we see him as much more than a stalker who has no choice but to give into his darkest desires. Multiple times he says he’ll burn down the world if it means he can save Addie. I don’t like it’s just thrown out there how jay’s character is bi, I wish we could’ve seen him get together with Michael or something! I probably could’ve skipped the whole series, but definitely could’ve skipped this book and just have read the cliff notes or given them a HEA in my headcanon at the end of book 1. I won’t be rereading due to intense dark themes and graphic details. There’s dark romance, and then there’s this series. Please don’t let your teenagers read this🫶

Like some other books I've reviewed, this story is difficult to rate and review simply due to the nature of it's plot. The FMC is kidnapped and sex trafficked and obviously there is some truth and real world parallels to the plot here, which is devastating. Speaking from the purely fictional parts of this story (and repeating what I wrote in my first review for the first book), I still don't understand the relationship between the two main characters. Again and again we hear about lack of consent and rape and sexual assault but to me, there was no clear difference between the MMC and the others that are clearly villainized (as they should be).  The author tells the reader that the FMC eventually learns to like the sexual advances from the MMC but WHY? When was there a switch between stalking and an actual relationship? I clearly didn't see it. When you write stories about deeply horrific things like this (that have real world parallels), you have to be sensitive, and I don't think this was a sensitive story at all.

i really wasn't sure how to rate this just because the content is so heavy - definitely check the triggers beforehand, and be very aware that all of the very graphic
sa/r4p3 isn't done by the mmc like in most dark romances
. i definitely consider this more of a thriller (a la gone girl) than a dark romance but i actually preferred this to the first book.

it feels like there's much more depth to the characters now (plus i got to see more of sibby and i love unhinged women personally) than in it's predecessor and i might be imagining it but there seemed to be a jump in quality in general from haunting adeline. i can imagine a lot of readers would have wanted
addie and zade to reunite much earlier than they did but i actually appreciated their time apart, and i think it gave a lot more depth to
addie. i think it was more "realistic" too, considering how
gritty the first half is, and it would have felt really flippant for her to just be rescued straight away from the tone of
the first part of this book. she was learning
how to "survive" without zade coming in on his high horse every time someone even thought of hurting her, which i think was really important for her development and her confidence in her own strength. technically, yeah, he did rescue her after she escaped but the fact that she managed to escape that horrible place by herself (knowing what she was risking if she failed) is impressive of its own accord
.

zade also showed a different side to himself in this book, which was unexpected. he'll always be an antihero but i don't think he's as irredeemable as he was in the previous book. more importantly TO ME
addie got to have her revenge arc - again, a la gone girl (one of the best movies ever put on this earth). it might just be the books i come across but i find it rare for the fmc in a dark romance to actually get to carry out true revenge and i need more of it personally. while the book is very dark, it sets up for a very satisfying deliverance of karma and i wasn't disappointed. i did think it was odd that addie was umming and ahhing over whether to ask zade not to kill rio even though zade himself did worse to her but i'm just relieved he survived in the end he was my favourite new character
:p
