i was surprised by this book— maybe it is because i listened to it on tape but the tone of the story felt very different from Flynn’s other books. maybe it is also been a while since i’ve read one of her books.

i really enjoyed the complicity of the narrative— there are so many stories happening at once with bread crumbs of the other stories. there seemed to be this artful craft of these stories falling into place— especially as ben and patty’s story’s collide in the end. there are red herrings left and right— as is in life.

was expecting more from the murder reveal. honestly felt a bit easy to have this family get murdered by two different people in one night. but i’m also glad this take didn’t unravel into some weird convention that the mystery genre loves to do.

A dark, raw, gruesome and disturbing story. I love how honest the characters are, even in the privacy of their own minds. How Gillian doesn't shy away from telling their deepest darkest thoughts.
I would say the book is quite a slowburn but you wouldn't even feel it you'll be constantly entertained whilst following the cookie crumbs trail. Gillian Flynn is a genius author I almost cannot believe this was published 13 years ago. It definitely stands the test of time and was insanely readable. Not even in the slightest falling short with other recently published thriller mysteries. If you don't mind twisted, unsettling stories with morally grey characters, this is perfect for you. For me personally, I adore this book. Right up my alley; writing and story wise.

Definitely check trigger warnings.

This book has broken me... In a good way.
It's crammed with so much, that it becomes an effort to read it in one long session.
There is a flip between past and present POV from various characters.
You are wrapped in a web of fears, opinions and ways of rural thinking and life.

Enjoyable but tense. It just keeps getting worse and worse, and I found myself rushing to the end, to be released, to know what happened and be free from the constant misery. In that way, I'd say this book achieved what it was supposed to do.
Gone Girl is still my favourite from her.

interesting plot lines, many twists and turns, and i loved the layout of the chapters/the different povs. however, there was so much detail and information in the first 2/3 of the book that the ending felt extremely rushed. it was a good book but i would definitely recommend others before this one.
