charming, foul, poignant, TMI, relatable, humble, inspiring. i love how he describes his marriage, his discussion of religion ("really, all religious teachings can be boiled down to, 'just be cool. don't be an asshole.'"

This book is weird--but not as weird as I expected from Mr. Offerman. Okay, it's not all that weird. Mostly it involves autobiography, which is pretty entertaining. I think I was much more intrigued by Offerman's tales of life growing up in the Midwest than in his later stories. Almost the entire second half of the book involves his time in Hollywood and what comes across as nearly obsessive devotion to his wife, Megan Mulally. It's endearing, to be sure, and great to read of someone so enthralled by his wife and their connection--but it gets a bit old. Overall, it's an entertaining book, with just enough humor to keep it afloat. I think people might be disappointed, expecting a more hilarious tome from Mr. Offerman. To be sure, I laughed at loud at several parts...just not as many as I expected to.

Nick has no problem with telling you his opinion and that makes him one of my heroes. This book gives a wonderful glimpse into the life of an aspiring actor who finally gets a break and now a great success. Life lessons are trickled in a long the way and in a lot of ways the book is rather inspiring.
I was searching for my next listen while I wait for my holds and found Paddle your own canoe by Nick Offerman and thought it would be a funny and interesting book. I have only really seen Nick Offerman on Parks and Rec so I didn’t know how much other stuff he has done and that he was a theater trained actor not necessarily wanting to be a film or tv actor. It was also so heart warming and sweet to hear about his relationship with his wife with Megan Maloney, I love how down to earth and real he seems to be.
I rate this book 4 stars and look forward to read or listen to more books by him

This was a pretty great listen! I talked in my reading-status updates a bit more about his voice and practicality. I disagree with him on a lot of things, and I could do without all the played-up masculinity - "let's all grow our beards and smoke some bacon"-level ridiculous. But that's his thing, and I get that, so whatever. It's nice to hear from someone working in Hollywood that they're genuinely happy with their life, and grateful for their experiences. He made me think a lot about how I spend my free time, which I need to be better at budgeting, and I definitely laughed out loud more than once.
Offerman's voice is also really great for this; I wouldn't be surprised if he dictated the whole book. He just reads in an incredibly natural way, and chuckles to himself over in-jokes or self-deprecating sections. I haven't picked up the print book, but I'd definitely recommend the audiobook for long drives.
Edited to add that I just remembered to look for the video of Offerman break dancing, and it was everything I'd hoped for and so much more.
