nothing beats a jet2holiday, not even death. and
never trust a family father in a holly jackson book.

i really enjoyed that. as a huge fan of books that take place within a week this was literally made for me. on the other hand i’m usually not a huge fan of knowing a character will die at the end, but i didn’t mind it so much here. holly jackson simply knows what’s up.

i wish i had written down my wild guesses after the first chapter because i completely forgot my suspects.
when they were still pretty vague about what happened with emily, i thought she might still be alive and killed jet for revenge for ruining her life. but as soon as they confirmed her death i knew luke had to be involved.

and it only got worse, didn’t it? i also guessed that billys mom left because of an affair (which was at least partly true). for a moment i thought, maybe it was jets dad and billys mom but then i remembered that jets mom didn’t vote for billys dad and that sealed the deal. i did not connect the dots, though. i didn’t expect luke actually to be his fucking son.

when they revealed that, i knew it had to be billys dad. i was so giddy that i figured it out, that i was caught completely off guard when jet died. it happened sooo quickly. i really liked her journey and i’m very proud of her. that being said, i’m not the biggest fan of the last chapter.

the fact that there was no real “reveal” for me probably adds to that. but i also just hated that luke shot him. up until then everything was fine. but billys das should’ve rotted in jail and luke was supposed to change for the better. i guess, it’s poetic in a way, but i still don’t like it.

nevertheless, i really loved this. until the next one!!!

I was curious about this book because I enjoyed Holly Jackson’s YA novels some years ago and wanted to see how her first adult thriller would compare.

However, I found the main characters a bit childish in the way they interacted with the world and with each other. I don’t mind reading YA from time to time, but in this story it started to feel a little annoying.

The plot takes place over a few days, with some references to the past woven in. Those parts were interesting, but overall it didn’t feel like a steadily building, gripping thriller—perhaps because there were so many twists along the way.

In the end, I gave it 3.75 stars. I enjoyed the story, but I wasn’t sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next.
