I loved this book so much! May and her friends' stories were so touching and sometimes hard to read, but I learned a lot about the Cheyenne tribe and DC politics of the time. Onto the next in the series!

This riveting novel is set against the historical backdrop of 1854 in Indian Country, as a group of white women are given to a Cheyenne chief to become brides for his warriors (the request was really made but the novel is a what if). I was captivated by this unique novel and can't wait to read its sequel! Read my full review at:

This could have been such a great book. The topic was fascinating and that's the only reason that I kept reading and didn't throw the book across the room. This book was clearly written by a man who knows nothing about women. Constant rape scenes that the women just get over with zero trauma, women who are pregnant and don't seem to be affected by it at all, I could keep going forever.

gmschneider's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 49%

The main character is not believable as a person in her time. Somehow every other human looks up to her, and she has zero negative emotions. She’s raped several times and is totally fine moving to the next sexual encounter. It’s well researched and the information on the tribes was fascinating but at the cost of caricature side characters and a dry, unrealistic main character. I was unimpressed.

I had hoped for more...authentic characters, historical detail and accuracy, less problematic gender and racial assumptions. But despite it's shortcomings, I found myself engaged in the story once I got about half way through and and finished it.

I think it is important for people to realize that the Brides for Indians program is a fiction. This never happened.
I was irritated to find out that what I thought was historical fiction was in fact, just fiction.
I thought the writing was corny and over-wrought, but put up with it because I wanted to learn more about this incredible chapter in our history I had never heard about.
Turns out I had never heard about it because it wasn't real!
