Fun and witty

I enjoyed the first in this series. I loved all the unique magical animals in it, and the wit of the main character. Seeing Hazel and Killian from the Hall of Blood and Mercy series was a ton of fun! I admit it was a bit slow for me for most of the book and wasn't as gripping as some of Shea's other books, but there was a steady ease of interest in it. Like a slow burning candle of interest instead of a raging fire. I have a feeling the next one will be much more captivating, though, based on the ending.

I found this while browsing KU. I've read Shea before and I thought the premise was good so I gave it a go. Parts of it were kind of campy and over the top silly and the middle almost lost me, but I ended up liking it enough to download the second in the series.

I thought Leila was kind of funny to start with, but she seemed petty and immature toward the middle of the book. She kept doing things to embarrass the nobles of her court, which seemed so strange to me. She definitely showed her age (and lack of maturity) with all of her antics. Still, I was curious what would happen with her court and the Wraith, so I kept reading. I'm glad I finished and I'm looking forward to the next book, but I think this was only about a 3.25 read for me.

Leila is awesome!

She's just such a fun heroine I can't wait to see what mischief she causes in the next book. And I'd love to have a night mare or a sun stallion or a gloom or a shade for a pet. Fabulous world building and characters. A great read - you won't regret it!
