Satrapi's blunt style of narrating typical teen idealism while acknowledging her own privilege allows a reader to empathize with a 12-year-old who was forced to grow up too quickly and miss out on her childhood experiences. As someone who is deeply interested in history and culture, her raw portrayal of Iran was at some points an eye-opener for me, particularly when it comes to Iran's political history.
i remember it being a moving book for me .. i just wish i could remember more
I honestly didn’t know what I was getting into when I first opened this book. But I really enjoyed it! I certainly learned a lot and I feel the characters were very relatable! I’ll definitely be checking out the sequel

4 Stars for Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjame Satrapi. Interesting, timely read. The author begins with these powerful notes: "I believe that an entire nation should not be judged by the wrongdoings of a few extremists. I also don't want those Iranians who lost their lives in prisons defending freedom, who died in the war against Iraq, who suffered under various repressive regimes, or who were forced to leave their families and flee their homeland to be forgotten. One can forgive but one should never forget."
Told in graphic novel format by the great-granddaughter of the last Shah of Iran, Satrapi gives us a first hand account of what life was like in Tehran in the 1980s. She witnessed the overthrow of the Shah’s regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the life-altering effects of war with Iraq. This is the story of a child's view of growing up during turmoil, as well as a reminder of the cost of political repression.

Not that I wouldn’t trust anything Emma Watson says, but there is definitely merit behind her claiming this as one of her favorite books. It’s a quick and good read but also has plenty of layers if you want something to unpack. Definitely on my to do list to read the sequel and watch the movie! You must read this book
