In part one, Marjane recounted her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. She gave a brief history of her country and explained the revolution through the eyes of a child. Marjane was well educated. She was raised by two progressive parents who encouraged Marjane to think for herself and be outspoken. As a young girl caught in a war, she was fascinated with death. People who died fighting in the war became her heroes. Marjane did not fully understand the meaning behind all of the violence; she thought that everything was for a good cause.
This first part was full of emotion. Though Marjane was intelligent and courageous, her age showed her naivete. Some of the things she used to say or think were a little irritating because of it. However, her descriptions of her country and how everything changed to be backward was heartbreaking.
Even though Marjane explained everything through the point-of-view of a child, it was very well described. The images that the author created to go along with her story portrayed the graphic novel's mood perfectly. This book was well done that it made me eager to pick up the second part.

“Don’t ever forget who you are.”
Truly unlike anything I’ve ever read (maybe that’s graphic memoirs for ya). Every page contains a touching/illuminating/horrifying/unthinkable anecdote that you just can’t help but be taken in. The art is stark and simple yet creative. Last panel is a knockout.

I have heard so many great things about this book and have no real reason why I haven't read it sooner.
This graphic novel follows Marjane as she maneuvers through her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution.
I found this writing to be light hearted considering the difficult subject matters covered in this book. Perhaps the perspective helps with making the topic of war and revolutions easier because I found myself laughing through certain parts just because you, as the reader, can understand how a child views what is going on around them. This book is literally a graphic historical text and I learned so many things I didn't know prior...including things I never knew I didn't know. I found this book to be insightful, comedic, and deep. I can't wait to get my hands on the second one.

I loved all the little details in the book that were left out of the film. Sad but also very enjoyable. Made me want to learn more about Iran.

Interesting way to experience a first hand account of a time / place we don't get to hear allot about. Very relevant for these times.
