This book was not at all what I was expecting! After passing it over for a year, I finally decided to read it after seeing it on many book award finalists lists. I didn't read any synopsis or reviews prior but for some reason I had thought this would be a historical fiction mystery?

i really wish i had something good to say about this book. i guess there was entertainment value but for the most part i was sitting there like… what is going on and wow this is stupid. this main character Molly is very clearly neurodivergent in some way and that is supposed to amplify the story if not have the whole plot hinge on it. i find it sorta lazy and also almost entirely implausible. also, molly literally admits to killing her gran and it’s just accepted??? sure, it was a way for her gran to go on her own terms but the whole book is trying ti prove that molly is incapable of murder and then she does that? as well as her internal monologue constantly falling into morbid bouts of murder fantasy for the people around her. she clearly isn’t stable based on her thoughts but it’s pretty much never touched on in the outside world. this book felt so messy and the fact that the murderer, a person rarely mentioned and sure, has the motive to kill… but still, gets off entirely scott free on some girl code??? absolutely not.
