This book was so harrowing!
It is a story of a girl from Nigeria who was abducted and then managed to escape her captivity. It explores the difficulties in escaping such captivity and in the girl's life after the captivity. This book doesn’t shy from the horrific events nor the people’s kindness. It is not for the faint yet it discusses important topics and is definitely a book that will broaden one's worldview.

Finish this book in the middle of the night because I just had to finish this James Tait Black Memorial Prize shortlisted book!

Set in the deep countryside of northeast Nigeria, this is a brutal story of a schoolgirl's abduction by Boko Haram. The story depicts her incarceration, moments of horror, and hunger. It depicts her hair-raising escape into the manifold terrors of the forest; and a descent into the labyrinthine bureaucracy and hostility awaiting her (a victim) upon her return home with a child blighted by enemy blood.

Just simply wow!

I believe this book did not need to be generously sprinkled with poetical lines. This is the sort of book that needs nothing more than facts, there is nothing poetical about suffering like this, it deserves to be told as it is. This book, in its style, reminds me of Heather Morris' Tattooist of Auschwitz, a distant, secluded piece of writing that left me feeling nothing but distaste in my mouth.
No matter how much you try to make it look like anything other than it really is, it still remains, in essence, a fictional narrative of a horrid event.

The first half, as horrific and disturbing as it is, was much stronger than the second half. I would've liked the book to explore her ostracisation further.
At first in intrigued but slowly I lost interest and didn’t want to force myself to finish it. This narrative didn’t sit right coming from a white Irish perspective and not that of a black Nigerian voice, especially considering it’s basis in the real life kidnapping of school girls by Boko Haram.
