Persuasion

4.11 AVERAGE

I re-read Persuasion for the third time, and with every pass I like it more. As always in Austen's work there are feeble-minded, greedy, morally weak characters, contrasted by those of calm and determined minds, who are able and willing to show their affection, and act accordingly to their conscience.
Anne Elliot has caused pain, and in this she's an unusual Austen heroine (there's Emma, of course, but Emma is much more lighthearted than Anne); but it also makes her relatable. Her calmness and good-natured, but nevertheless accurate observations of her fellow women and men make her a very likable character, too. And her struggles with her conscience and her determination to deal with the consequences she brought upon herself make for a melancholy mood in two thirds of the book. But these traits of Anne also make her happy ending very well deserved.

I can see why Persuasion is a classic, but it just wasn’t for me.

I got this book in 2023 and tried reading it multiple times. Restarted it so many times, carried it around with me everywhere, hoping it would finally stick—but it was such a difficult read for me. The pacing and style didn’t click, and I found myself drifting often.

That said, I do understand why people love it. Anne Elliot is a quietly strong and thoughtful protagonist, and I admire that about her. The themes of second chances and emotional restraint are powerful—just not the kind of romance that resonates with me.

Romance readers, please don’t cancel me! 😅 Maybe this one’s just not my era.

Another great read! Quite a change in Austen's typical heroines. Anne is older, mature, sensible, and comparatively simple. Anne's feelings and quiet, long-time suffering are relatable to those who have experienced great desire, love, and loss. I am always in awe of how Austen's writing can feel so modern despite it being of another time.
