Starting this before seeing the musical and finishing it afterwards was fantastic! I loved to see the subtle differences. I prefered the first part of the musical, because some of the Raoul’s actions and remarks took me out a bit, but the the last third of the book was so much more majestic than the ending of the musical. Overall I thought this was great if taken into the account the time it was written in. The themes explored are still relevant today, it got me wondering about modern day incels online lmao.
"And yet, deep down, I am not a bad man. Love me and you'll see! To be good, all I ever need was to be loved for myself. If you loved me, I would be as gentle as a lamb; and you could do with me as you pleased."
The Phantom of the Opera continues to be one of my most rereads, and one of my favorite books, movies, and plays. The book is mostly in third person, following Raoul most of the time. Which I found to be easy to follow, as well as enjoyable even though Raoul wasn't my favorite character. The setting of the story is eerie, mysterious, and the writing kept me engaged with the plot.

An OK read that brings better understanding to the ideas and plot of this story that most probably ignore in light of the musical. Worth the read.

The Phantom of the Opera, when you expect dark romance and it gives you one (1) emotionally unstable Vicomte crying in the closet.
I went in thinking it would be tortured genius + tragic love story, because I’ve seen the movie. Alas, I was scammed 😂
Instead, I got money envelopes, opera house logistics, and a main character with the personality of a boiled potato (yes Raoul, you).
That said… I didn’t hate it. I actually kind of loved it (?).
Once I stopped expecting swoony romance and embraced it for what it is: an early example of the dark romance villain backstory—it worked for me.
Erik was tragic but one dimensional. Raoul was a disgrace. But I liked the atmosphere of the opera house, the myth of the Phantom and how we heard of him but not from him.
The ending hit me. A single act of kindness, and death.
Is it perfect? Not at all. But I can see why this story stuck around. 4 stars, because classics don’t care what I think, but I’m glad I read it.
