I was completely surprised by this book. I was unsure about it for the first few chapters, but then I absolutely flew through it. It’s a tale of heartbreak, first love, and of course grief. I also love that it was inspired by James Patterson’s first and possibly true love.

Okay, the first thing that I want you to do is do not compare this book to The Fault in Our Stars. Just because this book is a love story involving cancer does not mean that it copied The Fault in Our Stars or even tried to be it. Besides, A Walk to Remember came out before The Fault in Our Stars and that was a love story involving cancer. Just because an author decides to write about cancer in a love story does not mean that no author can ever write a love story involving cancer again.

That being said, I thought that this book was beautiful and heartbreaking. It was a story of first love and even though the circumstances were extreme, it did not make this book unrealistic because no one's first love story is ever the same. I loved the adventure aspect of this book and the relationship between Axi and Robinson. For most of the novel they weren't in a relationship and just best friends and it was really sweet. I highly recommend this book if you want an adventure that involves love and is a little tragic. It is a great young adult novel I would suggest for slightly younger readers, only because I remember how reading these books felt when I was a blossoming young adult and I feel that it would have hit me better had I not been in my twenties.

But that being said I thought that James Patterson did a great job and I find it amazing how good of a romance author he is even though he normally does mystery and crime. This book is worth checking out, but please also read Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas by Patterson. It is a tragic romance novel as well and still haunts me.

While not particularly good, this book was the love of my life as a child and it gets a few points for that, for making me love <3

I started this book because it was left behind in a Vacation house we rented and looked like the best option. I only finished it because it was an easy read and I was halfway done when we left the house. There are others I would definitely recommend over this one.

I went into this book just for the story and for the sole purpose of wanting a romance novel that would pull at my heartstring and this definitely delivered just that. I liked it and I thought it was a cute, lovely story about teenage love and definitely worth reading.

My mother introduced me to James Patterson, or Jim as I affectionately refer to him when I love one of his books, about twelve years ago with 1st to Die. The stories of the Women's Murder Club turned into my junior thesis regarding American authors. For the record, this thoroughly pissed off my teacher as "you are supposed to pick a 'great American author,'" thus proclaiming my choice for Monsieur Patterson was somehow inadequate or substandard. Well, clearly this woman needed to pick up one of his books and see why I was drawn to him.

He has, what my mother and I refer to as his "girly books;" more like the stand alone novels that provoke an emotional outburst at some point that makes you hope you aren't in public at the time. (e.g. Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas, Sam's Letters to Jennifer, Sunday at Tiffany's, and a few others). I would add First Love to this assortment. Now, you may note that I have given this book a 4/5 star rating - however... Throughout the first (of three) sections the book is divided I would say it was a struggle to gain interest. There were several points where I thought, "get on with it Patterson;" this is what I call him when I'm annoyed with dear Jim.

However, leave it to Jim to turn a book around instantaneously and drawn you in so far that you forget where you are, you suddenly have known the characters your whole life, and with another flick of the screen (yes, I read this on a Nook), you've finished the novel. I'm talking the last 100 pages in a sitting that would be shorter than going to Sunday brunch and chatting it up with the family - book over. As for one of the "girly books," I'm glad the turn around happened and saved the story. It was able to make you feel for the characters and want to know what would happen, even if it's what you fear. Like most of his books, there's a distinct part in the book where you feel your heart has been ripped out and hit by a MAC truck and starts you on a roller coaster of emotions until the "About the Author" page appears and you close the book/turn off the screen.

Bravo, Jim. I look forward to your next "girly book" installment! Cheers!

Heart-warming and then heart- breaking when you least expect it. A beautiful love story and adventure. Good girl turned rebellious. I really liked this book and just zipped right through it.
