Just finished Something in the Water and I'm having a difficult time putting my thoughts together on this one.
Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave?
When the first chapter starts like that, you can only imagine what you're diving into. Right?
Erin and Mark are in that stage in life where their careers are great, they have a new home, they're recently engaged and are happily planning out their upcoming wedding and honeymoon. Erin is a documentary film maker and Mark is an investment banker. Life has been good to them.
During their lavish honeymoon in Bora Bora, Mark and Erin wash up upon something strange in the water during their scuba diving expedition. As much as they try to do the right thing, every decision made from this point on unravels into a colossal mess.
This mess is what keeps you intrigued. Keeps you captivated. Keeps you turning those pages. But the more I read I kept wondering, really? How does this even happen? What are the chances? Somewhere.... I felt a disconnect.
Overall, though, given that this was Catherine Steadman's debut novel, I thought the book was good. The idea for the story was interesting and I felt like it had the potential to go in many different directions.

From the very beginning of this book where the main character is explaining how she is digging a grave to bury a body to the very end, this was a fantastic suspenseful ride!
The author did a wonderful job of the narration (not something you can count on) even making the telephone conversations feel very far away.
There are so many layers to this story, from the love story and new marriage of the main character, to the prisoners about to released from prison who she is interviewing for her documentary to her husband's career. I really enjoyed this audiobook and it was a great listen on my 3 1/2 hour drive as well as the many drives back and forth while I started moving.

Started out with a great first chapter that had me hooked, but unfortunately the characters were greedy and made bad choices after bad choices. Not too mention the ending was a let down, I was like, that’s it!
