2.5. Can it be April already so I can read book 3??? SOOO much better than the show. The show left so much out and changed practically the whole story line, and the changes don't even make sense. Not sure how they're going to move forward with season 3 when they've completely derailed from the books...

Book one is a lot better, for sure, but the 2nd book doesn't completely suck. I don't think Kepnes makes Joe any more sympathetic or likeable than the first book - he's still just as creepy, but maybe not as deluded as he was in YOU with his relationship with Beck. In this book he's a sarcastic asshole. He still does some creepy shit, but his narrative is not as "I'm not crazy, YOU'RE cray" as it is in book one. Still enjoyable enough for me to look forward to the third book, though! A fun COVID read.

June 2021: just finished the 3rd book and think it’s better than this one. This one is forgettable. As I was reading the 3rd I kept forgetting what happened in this one when plot points from it were mentioned. I still think the first book is the best though, and I kind of wish this wasn’t turned into a series... YOU was perfection.

I just finished Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes, and wow—what a ride. This is the sequel to You, and it follows Joe Goldberg as he moves from New York to Los Angeles, hoping to leave his dark past (and bodies) behind. Of course, Joe being Joe, it doesn’t take long for things to spiral.

What I really enjoyed about this book was how Kepnes manages to make Joe such a compelling narrator. He’s completely messed up, manipulative, and dangerous, but somehow still weirdly likeable—or at least, interesting enough that I couldn’t stop reading. I found myself laughing at some of his thoughts, even when I was horrified by his actions. That blend of dark humour and suspense really worked for me.

I also liked the shift to LA. The satire of the city and its obsession with fame, image, and superficiality added a fresh dynamic. Joe is just as judgmental and sharp-tongued as ever, and his commentary on LA culture was both funny and brutally honest.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it dragged a little in places. Some parts felt a bit repetitive, especially when Joe kept making the same mistakes over and over. But overall, I still really enjoyed it and couldn’t put it down.

If you liked You, this is definitely worth picking up. Just don’t expect Joe to be any less twisted the second time around.
